The phrase '1 inch HDD' primarily refers to the Microdrive, a miniaturized mechanical hard disk drive introduced by IBM in 1999 WikipediaStoragenewsletter. Once a marvel of engineering, this product category is now entirely obsolete in the consumer market, having been replaced by flash memory technologies like SD and microSD cards GillwareWikipedia.

Product Overview & History

* The Microdrive Era (1999–2007): Launched by IBM to provide high-capacity storage for digital cameras and early MP3 players (like the iPod Mini). It utilized the CompactFlash (CF) Type II form factor, allowing it to fit into standard professional camera slots WikipediaWikipedia.

* Technical Marvel: Despite being smaller than a matchbox, it contained a spinning platter, a read/write head, and an actuator. Capacities ranged from 170 MB to 12 GB ComputerhistoryWikipedia.

* Top Models: The market was dominated by IBM (later Hitachi), with significant competition from Seagate (ST1 series) and Western Digital GillwareWikipedia.

Market Trends & Insights

* Total Obsolescence: As of 2026, the 1-inch HDD is a "dead" form factor. Manufacturers discontinued new development for 1-inch and smaller drives (like 0.85-inch) by 2009 due to the rapid rise of SSDs and flash memory Wikipedia.

* The Flash Takeover: Flash memory proved superior in every commercial metric: durability (no moving parts), power efficiency (no motor to spin), and speed (45 MB/s+ vs. the Microdrive's 6 MB/s) WikipediaStoragenewsletter.

* Modern Context: Today, "Microdrive" is often used as a brand name for generic USB flash drives or SSD products rather than the original mechanical disks AlibabaAlibaba.

2026 Storage Landscape

While 1-inch HDDs are gone, the broader HDD market is currently facing a supply crisis in 2026. Hyperscale demand and AI-driven storage needs have led to a structural shortage of high-capacity (20TB+) mechanical drives, causing prices to surge for the first time in years YahooYoutubeFusionww.

List of disk drive form factors - Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org

This smaller form factor, first used in an HDD by Seagate in 1980, was the same size as full-height 5+1⁄4-inch-diameter (130 mm) FDD, 3.25-inches high. This is twice as high as "half height"; i.e., 1.63 in (41.4 mm). Most desktop models of drives for optical 120 mm disks (DVD, CD) use the half height 5¼" dimension, but it fell out of fashion for HDDs. In the mid-to-late 1980s the similarly sized Fujitsu Eagle, which used (coincidentally) 10.5-inch platters, was a popular product. Such large platters were never used with microprocessor-based systems. With increasing sales of microcomputers having built in floppy-disk drives (FDDs), HDDs that would fit to the FDD mountings became desirable. Thus HDD Form factors, initially followed those of 8-inch, 5.25-inch, and 3.5-inch floppy disk drives. Because there were no smaller floppy disk drives, smaller HDD form factors developed from product offerings or industry standards. 9.5 in × 4.624 in × 14.25 in (241.3 mm × 117.5 mm × 362 mm). In 1979, Shugart Associates' SA1000 was the first form factor compatible HDD, having the same dimensions and a compatible interface to the 8" FDD. 5.75 in × 3.25 in × 8 in (146.1 mm × 82.55 mm × 203 mm). Samsung calls the same form factor "1.3 inch" drive in its product literature. 24 mm × 5 mm × 32 mm. Toshiba announced this form factor in January 2004 for use in mobile phones and similar applications, including SD/MMC slot compatible HDDs optimized for video storage on 4G handsets. With 3.5-inch drives making slightly more than half of today’s shipments, it is estimated that by 2030 70% of all HDD shipments will be 3.5-inch drives, due to the declining presence of 2.5-inch in portable devices due to the adoption of SSDs. By 2009, all manufacturers had discontinued the development of new products for the 1.8-inch, 1.3-inch, 1-inch and 0.85-inch form factors due to falling prices of flash memory, which has no moving parts.

Microdrive - Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org

Following the merger of IBM and Hitachi HDD business units, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies continued the development and marketing of the Microdrive. In 2003, 2 GB and 4 GB models were announced by Hitachi. The 4 GB model was first available on February 20, 2004 for a price of $499. This was followed by a 6 GB capacity model in February 2005 for a price of $299, with the 4 GB model dropping to $199. Hitachi additionally planned an even smaller 1-inch hard drive with a capacity of 8-10 GB under the code-name "Mikey" for late 2005 with a weight of 14 grams and a size of 40 mm × 30 mm × 5 mm. In June 1999, IBM officially launched the first generation 1-inch Microdrive. The drive was initially ordered by several companies such as Compaq, Casio, Minolta, Nikon, and more. The first generation of the Microdrive was a partial success, having a few products released using the drive such as the Sanyo VPC-SX500, and Casio QV2000UX. A second generation of Microdrive was announced by IBM the following year in June 2000. These models would draw less power with a spindle speed reduction to 3600 RPM and have a higher bit density of 15.2 gigabit-per-square-inch. In 2004, Seagate launched 2.5 and 5 GB hard disk drives in the same small physical form-factor as IBM Microdrive and referred to them as either 1-inch hard drives or CompactFlash hard drives due to the trademark issue. These drives were also commonly known as the Seagate ST1. In 2005, Seagate launched an 8 GB model. Seagate also sold a standalone consumer product based on these drives with a product known as the Pocket Hard Drive. On December 28, 2004, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced it had filed lawsuit against GS Magicstor, Inc., GS Magic, Inc., and Riospring, Inc. for infringement of multiple Hitachi GST's patents relating to hard disk drives, after GS Magic Inc. had started promoting mini-HDD (small form factor hard disk drive). Cornice was founded in 2000. Based in Longmont (Colorado), it quickly came out with 4GB and 8GB microdrive models, destined to the MP3 player and mobile phone markets. Hit with patent infringement lawsuits by Seagate and other disk drive companies, and faced with stiff competition and lagging sales, the company eventually folded in 2007. Toshiba decided to skip the 1" form factor, and in March 2004 announced a 0.85" drive that shipped in September of the same year. The leader of mobile drive development at the IBM Fujisawa facility at the time, Hideya Ino, highly sought the potential of a 1-inch disk drive. He had a team collaborate with the IBM researchers to create working prototypes. Those prototypes were then used to persuade product planning and marketing teams to support the project.

History of hard disk drives - Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org

Subsequently, there was a period of about 20 years in which other technologies competed with disks in the secondary storage marketplace, for example tape strips, e.g., NCR CRAM, tape cartridges, e.g., IBM 3850, and drums, e.g., Burroughs B430, UNIVAC FASTRAND, but all ultimately were displaced by HDDs. The IBM 1301 Disk Storage Unit, announced in 1961, introduced the usage of heads having self-acting air bearings (self-flying heads) with one head per each surface of the disks. It was followed in 1963 by the IBM 1302, with 4 times the capacity. Also in 1961, Bryant Computer Products introduced its 4000 series disk drives. These massive units stood 52 inches (1.3 m) tall, 70 inches (1.8 m) long, and 70 inches (1.8 m) wide, and had up to 26 platters, each 39 inches (0.99 m) in diameter, rotating at up to 1,200 rpm. The swing arm was adopted in the 1980s for all HDDs and is still used nearly 50 years and 10 billion arms later. Smaller diameter media came into usage during the 1970s and by the end of the decade standard form factors had been established for drives using nominally 8-inch media (e.g., Shugart SA1000) and nominally 5.25-inch media (e.g., Seagate ST-506). During the 1970s, captive production, dominated by IBM's production for its own use, remained the largest revenue channel for HDDs, though the relative importance of the OEM channel grew. The industry production consolidated around the 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch form factors; the larger form factors dying off while several smaller form factors were offered but achieved limited success, e.g. HP 1.3-inch Kittyhawk, IBM 1-inch Microdrive, etc. In 2001, the HDD industry experienced its first ever decline in units and revenue. Manufacturing began in California's Silicon Valley in 1957 with IBM's production shipment of the first HDD, the IBM RAMAC 350. The industry grew slowly at first with three additional companies in the market by 1964: Anelex, Bryant Computer Products and Data Products. The industry grew rapidly in the late 1960s and again in the 1980s reaching a peak of 75 manufacturers in 1984. In the 1980s US firms, beginning with Seagate, began to shift production to Singapore and then other locations in southeast Asia. In a span of seven years, 1983 to 1990, Singapore became the single largest location of HDD production, amounting to 55% of worldwide production.

History (1991): 1.5-Inch HDD - StorageNewsletter

www.storagenewsletter.com

HDD manufacturer Ecol.2 was the first and only manufacturer of 1.5-inch HDDs. They were revealed in October 1991. Both the EC1-50 and EC1-100 had a capacity of 50MB and were supposed to be in production in 3Q92. Ecol.2 (Point Arena, CA, near San Francisco), short for Ecology 2000, was a pioneer in glass disk drives, […] He was the founder of RMS, Maxtor and Areal. Wooward has been GM of Areal. The main reason they left Areal is that the company has decided to focus on 2.5-inch HDDs based on glass disks when they believed there was a potential market for 3.5-inch ones for laptop computers. The first products, with first evaluation units supposed to be available in 3Q91, was a series of 3.5-inch HDDs named Glasstor with one 100MB single glass disk. Since of 1990, it promised a one-inch high 50 or 100MB unit with one single glass disk and less than 20ms access time, with ecology in mind using recycled materials whenever possible. Ecol.2 tried, in 1990, with no more success, to venture in 1.5-inch form factor with a 50MB drive. The HDD manufacturer went out of of business in 1993. The first series includes one-inch high drives and formatted capacity of 50MB or 100MB, the second one 0.67 inch high with 100MB or 200MB.

A Brief History of Hard Drives | Gillware Data Recovery

www.gillware.com

IBM created the Microdrive, a 1-inch 170MB or 340MB HDD that has long since been yielded obsolete by flash memory. Maxtor acquired Quantum, making them the largest hard drive manufacturer in the world. Seagate also launched the first 15,000 rpm hard drive. In just six short years, Maxtor would be completely bought out by Seagate. The Serial ATA, or SATA Interface was released in 2003. The original model allowed up to 1.5Gb/sec data transfer. In 1988, Conner produced the first 1-inch high, 3.5-inch hard drive, a common form factor today. Western Digital also acquired Tandon Corporation in 1988, marking their entry into the IDE hard drive market. Western Digital officially launches their first 3.5-inch IDE drive. Maxtor also acquires MiniScribe, a bankrupt organization that allowed them to expand their low-end HDD production. The patent described a system that we would today refer to as RAID 4. The first RAID system would not be physically assembled until the late 1980s. Seagate Technology was founded. 1979 also saw the release of IBM’s 3370 system, the first drive to use thin-film heads. Seagate released the ST-506, the first 5.25 inch HDD for use in microcomputers. IBM also released the first 1 Gigabyte capacity HDD in 1980, though it was about 550 pounds and cost $40,000. In 1981, Shugart Associates announced the SASI interface, or Shugart Associates Systems Interface. This would be the predecessor to SCSI. Fun fact: Alan Shugart is also responsible for the creation of Seagate Technologies. Western Digital announced the first single-chip Winchester hard drive controller. In 1983, Rodime launched the first 3.5 inch hard drive, complete with two platters and a capacity of 10MB.
