10 Dollar Laptop
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
The phrase "10 dollar laptop" primarily refers to a historical ambitious project from India (2009) rather than a currently available commercial product. While a functional new laptop at $10 remains technically impossible due to component costs, the market has evolved significantly in the ultra-low-cost segment.
Key Market Insights
* Historical Context: The original $10 laptop project (often associated with the Sakshat or Aakash tablets) was eventually downgraded to a wireless e-learning storage device. Critics noted that a true $10 BOM (Bill of Materials) was impossible without extreme government subsidies. Slashdot
* Current B2B Pricing: In today's wholesale market, the closest functional equivalents are refurbished corporate laptops, which can be sourced for as low as $28–$29 in bulk lots. New entry-level 14-inch laptops for students typically range from $72–$98.
* 2026 Trends: The budget market is experiencing a "Renaissance" driven by AI integration (NPUs) and higher build quality standards, though prices for "quality" budget machines have shifted toward the $400–$600 range. Pcmag
