Technically the controllers are numbered in an array, but im not sure their order in that array really means anything. From a developer standpoint I can tell you: I am required to tell the user which user is paired to the primary controller (maybe indie games only have to do this?) You have to pick a golfer and then assign them controller 1, 2, 3, or 4. My buddies don't even sign in on my Xbox anyways when they just come over to play. Guess we'll just keep passing controllers around until we figure it out. But it just seems like there should be a way to know. ... It actually works quite well and is not unreliable, as you say.
