No variant of this phone was released for the United States market. It runs on Series 60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 1 (Version 2.1), based on Symbian OS 7.0s. It features several games (including multiplayer Bluetooth games), a 1.23-megapixel camera, Nokia Lifeblog, a 32 MB RS-MMC to store extra images and applications, Push to Talk, a 176×208 pixel 65,536-colour screen, multimedia messaging, and RealPlayer. The Nokia 3230 is one of the first with Push to Talk over Cellular (PoC), a walkie-talkie style method of communicating, and also Visual Radio, which enhances a normal radio receiver with extra info about artists and songs delivered over GPRS. Less than 2 days is typical whereas older 'mono screen' phones can often manage a week between recharging. Users also reported that before the call ringtone sound, the 3230 would give a loud "beep" sound, with no way to turn it off or control its volume. The device would beep even on silent mode. This issue was most common in the early models of the phone. The Nokia 3230 (type RM-51, codenamed Blitz) is a Series 60 mobile phone announced by Nokia on November 2, 2004 alongside the 6020 and 7710, and released in early 2005. The phone was offered in two colors - black and red. Both colorways offer a two-tone design where the keypad is silver and the frame has a metal-like finish. Fine dust can get into the space between the display and the plastic screen lens. The dust can be manually removed by removing the front housing. During an incoming call, message, or clock alarm, the 3230 would give a beep before the ringtone, with no way to turn it off or control its volume. The 3230 has the exact same ringtones as the 7610, albeit some of them sound slightly different. Part of the reason for that is the fact it's made some odd decidedly odd handset design choices in recent years. It let Sony Ericsson overtake on styling, its early 3G offerings misfired and its more quirky designs rarely convinced, writes Benny Har-Even. This brings us to the 3230, a phone that seems to have something of an identity problem. Indeed Nokia itself seems a bit confused, as on its site we found a picture of the 3230 showing a 1.3 megapixel label, which it clearly isn't. There's no built in flash, but there is one as available as an accessory, though I can't imagine that anyone who's into taking pictures with their phone that much wouldn't just go for a phone with a flash in the first place. Yet its feature list contains some decidedly non-business applications, which left me a tad confused as to how to take this phone. The handset is a standard 2.5G phone with tri-band coverage with GPRS so it makes sense there's only a single camera on the back. Indoors, pictures also showed a criss-cross line pattern but then again it was only a picture of a kettle, so no great loss. The long top-half gives the impression that the screen is extra large but in fact the 176 x 208 resolution is no bigger than previous Series 60 phones.

Thomas Boys looks at the Nokia 3230 as a replacement for a much loved Sendo X. How does this budget Series 60 phone from Nokia standup? Not bad, but there are some complaints. Having used a Sendo X that is starting to get a little elderly and with a contract up for renewal, I thought I'd try one of Nokia's Series 60 offerings to see how it compares. One of the main attractions of the 3230 is its small form factor, with a modern, refined design. This isn't to say that it doesn't have its fair share of faults. The first one that will strike you is that when entering either text or numbers one-handed, the phone feels "unbalanced". Now this is a good idea. It allows people to track your phone when switched on and works in a similar fashion to Psiloc’s Mini-GPS app. Very handy if your phone gets stolen and invaluable for the parent concerned about their offspring’s whereabouts. The 3230 is billed as a multimedia phone, a claim which it lives up to, up to a point. Once you’ve finished taking your photo or shooting your movie clip (which for some immensely annoying reason, Nokia spell “muvee”), you can edit them by using the two multimedia editors which come with the phone – Photo Editor and Movie Editor. The good news is that if you remove them to free up some space, you can later on download both from the Nokia website. The capabilities of each are not bad – provided you’re not expecting Adobe PhotoShop in 300Kb, you can do a reasonable amount of cutting, cropping, editing and pasting. The selection of games built into the 3230 is pretty good as well.
