The first thing I noticed when I picked up the Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D was that the feel of the grip has been majorly improved over the XTi / 400D. However, the actual physical changes are minor. Basically, the big difference for me is that the fingertip portion of the grip is recessed slightly farther up the body (closer to the self-timer lamp). So the 450D / XSi performs to its 3.5fps specification and shoots comfortably quicker than the Sony Alpha A350, which in our tests came out at about 2.35fps. This extra speed will be welcomed by anyone shooting action sequences, but it’s still not a patch on the 6.5fps of Canon’s own EOS 40D. The Canon EOS 450D / XSi is equipped with a 9-point wide-area AF system with a centre cross sensor; the diamond arrangement of the AF points and their red dots to indicate which are active may appear identical to the earlier 400D / XTi, but Canon claims it’s an improved system. Set to AI Servo and Continuous drive mode, the EOS 450D / XSi with its kit lens zoomed-into 55mm managed to stay-focused on vehicles approaching at up to 50kph. The Canon EOS 450D / XSi offers four metering modes: 35-zone TTL Evaluative, Partial (9% of v/f area), Spot (4% of v/f area) and Center-weighted. So like most DSLRs, dust can get into the 450D / XSi and remain present even after the filter has been vibrated. But we’ve seen worse examples and the fact they’re hard to spot even at f16 is some consolation. That said, if you change lenses regularly, you’ll still need to occasionally rely on the manual cleaning technique of opening the shutter and using a blower. The Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera incorporates a number of high-end functions and technology found in Canon's professional SLR models, including an improved autofocus sensor, enhanced 14-bit A/D conversion, and an advanced Live View function. The camera also incorporates the Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions (previously found only on Canon's Professional Digital SLRs) and the camera is equipped with Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology, which corrects image brightness and contrast automatically to prevent underexposure with backlit scenes. The EOS Rebel XSi is fast - capable of continuously capturing 3.5 frames per second for bursts of up to 53 images. Furthermore the EOS Rebel XSi camera features Live View - which allows users to frame shots through the LCD screen rather than the viewfinder - this is particularly useful when shooting at odd angles or in situations when looking through the viewfinder is impractical. The Rebel XSi DSLR utilizes Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning system. In a departure from previous EOS Digital Rebel models, which accommodated CF type memory cards, the EOS Rebel XSi camera utilizes SD and SDHC memory cards including those with capacities higher than 2GB, making it the perfect upgrade for users already equipped with SD cards from point-and-shoot model cameras. Pre-PMA 2008: Canon has today announced a new compact digital SLR, the twelve megapixel EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi). On the surface a very similar camera to the EOS 400D, however there are a range of significant improvements; twelve megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0" LCD monitor, Live View with both AF modes (contrast-detect and passive), 14-bit processing and RAW, spot metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps continuous shooting, a larger viewfinder, SD/SDHC storage and a new higher capacity battery. The EOS 450D employs features already proven in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor and a redesigned menu system that enables features such as direct control of Speedlite flash units from the camera LCD.
