The 808 PureView featured a four-inch display and was 13.7mm thick, extending to 18mm at the camera. It also included a xenon flash — as used on compact cameras. Although a niche product, it underlined Nokia's continued ability to innovate with supply-chain partners at the time, even though Nokia was starting a steep period of decline. Despite its impressive camera capability, it was ultimately hindered by its operating system and hefty $599 price tag. The weakness of the operating system immediately manifested itself in the time it took to process images once they had been taken – a major shortcoming of the device. This was due to the 808’s hardware platform being old. While the 808 had a 1.3 GHz ARM CPU, 512MB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage, the camera’s shot-to-shot times when running in full resolution mode were very slow. Rather than counting shots per second, 808 users had to think in terms of seconds per shot. Despite the phone’s limitations, its innovative camera lived on. A year after the 808 PureView, Nokia launched the Lumia 1020. This Windows Phone smartphone included a similar large 41-megapixel camera, but it was now housed in a slimmer design and was supported by more powerful hardware.

In both video and stills, this technique provides greater zoom levels as the output picture size reduces. The Nokia 808 PureView has a 41.3 megapixel 1/1.2 in CMOS FSI image sensor with 7728×5368 pixels, built by Toshiba and branded HES9. Zoom is digital, meaning the image is cropped from a smaller portion of the image sensor, with a corresponding reduction in the level of pixel binning as the zoom is increased. In general, the camera of the Nokia 808 PureView retains a high resolution even when zoomed in, due to the 41 MP sensor. Due to the comparatively large 1/1.2 in sensor and the comparatively fast lens with f/2.4 aperture, the camera has a quite shallow depth of field, equivalent to approximately f/7.8 at 26 mm on 35 mm full-frame. The 808 PureView has a mechanical shutter with short shutter lag and ND8 (3 f-stops) neutral density filter.
