Can Sigma's New 85mm Art Actually Win Full Frame Market?

According to the company’s press release, the 85mm f1.2 is slated to launch in September 2026 and will complete Sigma’s f1.2 line-up. But one must remember that the focal range is already available from multiple camera brands, so how can Sigma step into this market and make a change? Currently, Sigma is competing with various brands: Sony FE 85mm f1.4 GM II (2024): Known for its incredibly lightweight (642g) and 3x faster AF than the previous lens. An 85mm lens is an ideal solution for many portrait photographers, and Sigma ensures that photographers get the best of it with their variant. Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art (2020): Tinier lens than the DSLR variant, and also within its own stable. Canon RF 85mm f1.2L USM (2019): Heavy but considered to have a look that is hard to replicate; but this will only matter if Canon opens up the RF mount to Sigma for full-frame development. The Sigma 35mm f1.2 II DG Art lens is wonderful mostly because of the working experience that I can have with it. It’s fast, reliable enough, weather resistant, light enough, and is truly a lot of fun to work with. For the most part, it gets out of the way of making great images. When launched, the Sigma 85mm can do wonders, given that Canon and Nikon’s versions are a bit expensive (close to $3000). Sigma, if it can deliver the same performance as the other two at 3/4 the price, people will certainly go after it.

Frost tests each lens at its maximum aperture, scoring sharpness in the center and corners out of 10, and the results are close enough to be genuinely surprising. One of the biggest shocks is the Viltrox 85mm f/1.4, which sits at around $600 and outperforms some of Nikon and Canon's best glass in center sharpness. The Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 also appears, a manual focus DSLR-era lens that's legendary for its build quality and image rendering, and Frost notes it was recently spotted at B&H for around $2,000, which is less than half its original price. Just above it sits the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II, which Frost calls as sharp as it gets on Sony E-mount cameras, even wide open at f/1.4 on a 42-megapixel body. The improvement over the original version is real, and the size reduction makes it a more practical option as well. Both of these lenses score so closely that the difference is something you'd need to spend considerable time studying test charts to even notice. Picking the sharpest 85mm lens on the market is harder than it sounds, because the gap between the top options is razor thin.

And that’s before you even consider the more exotic options like the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S or NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S, which represent the absolute pinnacle if money is no object. If you make your living from shooting portraits, then you probably already know which lenses you want — and you may be considering the higher-end options like the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S or NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S. It is sharp, focuses quickly, gives strong subject separation, and produces a flattering look without the size, weight, and cost of the 85mm f/1.2 S. If you shoot professionally, work in low light, or need the best possible performance, Nikon’s f/2.8 zooms make sense. But for landscapes, travel, wildlife, and general photography, lenses like the 14-30mm f/4, 24-120mm f/4, and 180-600mm often give a better balance of performance, cost, size, and practicality. It’s not cheap, but if you want to create portraits with strong subject separation that your standard zoom simply can’t match, it’s absolutely worth it. The lens is incredibly sharp, focuses quickly and accurately, and at f/1.8 on a full-frame sensor, gives you a really nice level of background blur. The focal length is more versatile than 85mm, the image quality is excellent, autofocus is quick and reliable, and it’s also smaller and lighter.

The Sigma 85mm f/1.2 DG Art will be officially announced in September 2026 and will be available in Sony E and Leica L mounts. No official price has been announced at this stage, but based on the positioning of the 35mm f/1.2 DG II Art and 50mm f/1.2 DG Art, both launched at round $1,549, we can expect a relatively reasonable price given its compact size. By way of comparison, the only two other 85mm f/1.2 autofocus lenses on the full-frame mirrorless market are much more expensive: around $3,099 for the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM and $2,796 for the Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.2 S. The CP+ 2026 trade show in Yokohama was an opportunity for Sigma to make a big splash with the announcement of an upcoming 85mm f/1.2 DG Art lens. For now, this lens is only in the development stage, with a few unknowns still remaining, but we were able to get our hands on it at the Sigma booth.
