915MHz Zigbee Gateway & Bridge Guide

The market for 915MHz Zigbee is entering a transformative phase with the release of Zigbee PRO 2023 and the Sub-GHz (Suzi) extension. Historically dominated by 2.4GHz, Zigbee is now moving into the 900MHz band to compete in long-range and industrial IoT sectors.

Market Trends & Technical Insights

* Expansion into Industrial IoT (IIoT): The shift to 915MHz (North America) and 868MHz (Europe) is primarily driven by the need for better signal penetration through concrete and over long distances in smart cities, factories, and multi-story campuses. Iottechnews Eenewseurope

* Infrastructure Efficiency: Sub-GHz signals offer significantly greater range than 2.4GHz, reducing the number of repeaters and nodes required for large-scale deployments, which lowers the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Iottechnews

* Dual-Band Coexistence: New Zigbee stacks support dual-band interoperability, allowing 2.4GHz and 915MHz devices to function within the same mesh network via bridge devices. Eenewseurope

* Competitive Landscape: By adopting 915MHz, Zigbee is now in direct competition with LoRaWAN, Z-Wave Long Range, and Wi-Fi HaLow for the sub-GHz long-range market. Staceyoniot Iottechnews

Product Insights

While 2.4GHz remains the consumer standard, 915MHz products are emerging in the enterprise gateway and universal bridge categories. For example, universal smart bridges like the Sonoff ZB Dongle-E are already labeled for 915MHz compatibility.
