The Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR) is a critical infrastructure component designed to bridge the gap between legacy TDM networks and modern IP/MPLS environments. As of late 2026, the market reflects a mature lifecycle phase where secondary market activity and transition to 5G-ready edge platforms are dominant trends Scribd Nokia.

Product Overview and Technical Insights

The 7705 SAR family is distinguished by its ability to support both high-speed Ethernet (up to 10GbE) and legacy interfaces (T1/E1, RS-232, analog voice) in a single platform Tempestns Telecomcauliffe.

Chassis Variants: The portfolio spans from the high-capacity SAR-18 (140 Gb/s throughput) to compact, ruggedized units like the SAR-Hm designed for field area networks Tempestns.
Key Capabilities: Its core strengths include microsecond-level synchronization (IEEE 1588v2 PTP), advanced security (MACsec, IPsec, and TPM 2.0), and industrial hardening (fanless, -40°C to +65°C operating range) Nokia Tempestns.

Market Trends and Sourcing Insights (2025–2026)

The current market for the 7705 SAR is driven by three primary factors:

1TDM Retirement Acceleration: Telecommunications and utility operators are aggressively retiring SONET/SDH equipment, leading to high demand for the 7705 SAR as a migration "bridge" Lightreading Tempestns.
2Secondary Market Dominance: Due to the maturity of the product line, there is a robust secondary market. Refurbished units are widely available at 50% to 95% off original list prices, though new surplus stock is becoming scarcer Telecomstraders 1Com.
3Security Mandates: Increased regulation (e.g., NERC CIP) has driven a "Gen2" hardware refresh, where buyers prioritize newer modules with integrated hardware-based trust (TPM 2.0) Nokia Nokia.
