Flow over an isolated rotating disc can be used as a starting point for analysis of flow in a rotor-stator disc system where a disc rotates in close proximity to a stationary disc. The flow associated with discs is important in a number of applications ranging from disc drives for the memories of computers and electronic products to automotive discs brakes, flywheels, cutting discs, gear wheels, and discs to support turbomachinery blades. It also ensures a fresh coating of solution on the disk surface and prevents the solution from solidifying at the disk edge during electrospinning. Rotating cylinder and disk spinnerets have been analyzed by Niu et al. (2009). The rim radius of a cylinder spinneret can reduce discrepancies in electric field intensity and influence the fiber productivity. Shear stresses between the disc and the fluid in which it is rotating dictate the power required to drive the disc to overcome frictional drag, and the local flow field will influence the heat transfer. Unfortunately, a number of factors combine to frustrate any universal analysis, and the flow conditions and the proximity of local geometry need to be taken into account. ... Rotating disks, such as impellers in steam turbines and turbo compressors, are a typical kind of machine part in engineering. A detailed description of the design and operation of a rotating disc system for studying mass transfer in electrochemical reactions was reported by Riddiford (1966). This apparatus was first applied to particle deposition by Marshal and Kitchener (1966) and Hull and Kitchener (1969).

The pumping power losses during the transportation of crude oils are considered as one of the main power consuming applications due to the turbulent mode of transportation. Investigating the possible solutions for this problem is expensive and time consuming due to the large apparatuses needed to simulate the flow in real pipelines. Rotating disk apparatus (RDA) is an instrument mainly comprising a rotating disk and an electrical motor to rotate the disk, which was implemented as an efficient and economical path to simulate what can be done in pipelines through generating a controlled degree of turbulence. This technique was also used in many other scientific applications due to its dynamic mode of operation. For example, a rotating disk electrode was used in electrodeposition processes and to characterize deposition film thickness and uniformity. The rotating disk reactor was employed to investigate the reaction rate between fluids and solid surfaces.

This category revolves around various types of rotating disk computer storage media. The discs may be permanently attached to, or removable from, the computer. For large computer systems such as mainframes and server farms, the discs may be connected to a network, and thus may be situated physically distant from the computers they serve. In the latter setup, rotating discs tends to replace some magnetic tape data storage systems (although tape storage is still less expensive per data unit stored). For articles on the drives and devices which use this media see Category:Hard disk computer storage

Due to the short residence time of the fluid on the spinning disk, this can be heated to much higher temperatures than in other types of reactors, therefore allowing the fluid to reach (for short times) temperatures that trigger chemical reactions that would be otherwise inaccessible. ... Spinning disc and rotating tube reactors (more often called processors, SDP and RTP, respectively) are considered as a scalable, continuous and high throughput method for nanomaterial synthesis. Their application for the NP production has been reviewed in a recent work of Chen et al. Two operation modes can be employed in these reactors: a continuous mode [159] or a recycle mode [160], when the product that is collected is fed back to the disc. Using the first type of design, Ag NPs of different sizes were synthesized from silver nitrate, ascorbic acid and soluble starch as stabilizing agent (as its biocompatibility makes it favourable for biomedical application) in water at room temperature [158]. The tunability in particle size from 5 to 200 nm was achieved by varying the disc speed and the concentration of the reactants. The same group, in a later report, extended this approach to synthesize Ag NPs of less than 10 nm size, by replacing starch with PVP, and improved the reaction yield up to 85% by increasing the recycling time [160]. They also exploited this synthesis in continuous mode in order to increase the production rate, and found that the yield was actually higher in the recycle mode [159]. Furthermore, using the same setup, magnesium hydroxide NPs (spherical and disc shaped, 50–80 nm and 10 nm thick) were synthesized in continuous mode [165]. Rotating tube reactors are related to SDPs in generating thin films with turbulent flow, with an advantage of an extended residence time of the liquid in the processor. This processes a slurry containing approximately 200 g of custard powder (predominantly corn starch granules) per litre at a flow rate of 2 ml/s to 3 ml/s. The slurry is pumped over the disc which rotates at 600 to 1200 rpm. This produces a thin film of liquid that is rapidly heated before being cooled on the walls, maintained at a temperature of 70°C. Control of the level of cooking, and hence output product viscosity is achieved through the choice of flow rate and rotational speed.
