The phrase BYK 6801 refers to the Spectral Color Wizard, a legacy portable handheld spectrophotometer from BYK-Gardner used for precise color and gloss measurement in the coatings, plastics, and automotive industries Nbchao Byk-Instruments.

Product Overview

The BYK 6801 integrates two functions into a single device: a 45/0 geometry spectrophotometer for color and a 60° glossmeter Nbchao.

Key Specifications: It features a spectral range of 400–700 nm, a gloss measurement range of 0–100 GU, and memory for 1,500 standards Nbchao.
Applications: Primarily used for quality control to ensure batch-to-batch color consistency and surface appearance Byk-Instruments Byk.
Current Status: While the 6801 remains in use, BYK-Gardner has introduced advanced successors like the spectro2guide, which adds fluorescence measurement to color and gloss Byk-Instruments.

Market Trends & Insights (2026-2033)

The market for color measurement instruments is closely tied to the broader coating additives and pigments sectors, both showing robust growth driven by the Asia Pacific region Gminsights Grandviewresearch.

Growth Outlook: The coating additives market is projected to reach $12.1 billion by 2026, growing at a 6.5% CAGR through 2033 Grandviewresearch. The pigment market follows at a 4.9% CAGR, emphasizing high-performance and specialty metallic finishes Gminsights.
Digitalization Trend: There is a significant shift toward digital color standards, where instruments like the BYK 6801 (or its modern versions) replace physical samples to reduce errors and speed up production Byk Altana.
Sustainability Impact: Environmental regulations (e.g., PFAS-free, low-VOC) are forcing coating manufacturers to reformulate, increasing the demand for precise color verification to maintain aesthetic standards during these chemical transitions Paint Coatingsworld.

Sourcing Alternatives

As the original BYK 6801 is often replaced by newer models or cost-effective alternatives, the B2B market currently offers several high-precision replacements ranging from $2,200 to $3,450.
