The use of good-quality headphones by ordinary folk has exploded in the last few years. These days it’s common see a trendy young thing wearing several hundred pounds’ worth of giant headphone on the train. The AKG K451 offers an altogether more sensible option. Unlike most headphones at the price, the AKG K451 use a handy single-sided removable cable system, and two cables come bundled – along with a great semi-rigid carry case. One cable has a 3-button remote for iPhones and iPods, and a mic for hands-free calls, the other does not. It helps secure the cable, but also means the cable housing extends quite a way out of the earcups. It’s an annoyance for wearers of big scarves or high-neck coats, but just about no-one else. In summary – have funny ears or appreciate neck-based couture? The AKG K451 may not be for you. The AKG K451 are £50-odd on-ear headphones. They’re the most portable type of headphone that doesn’t jam into your ear canal. These are particularly portable in their class too. Their earcups barely extend beyond your earlobes, they fold up for easier stowing-away and they feature a 3-button remote control for Apple devices. If you think that people look a little ridiculous wearing head-dominating over-ears cans when on the train, the AKG K451 are the sort of headphones you’re after.

Pros: Compact, solid build, carry case included, cable can be replaced, single sided cable, easy to live with sound, good bass response · Cons: Can become uncomfortable after long periods, lacks a little sparkle · Considering the poor review level here I felt I had to post a review: I spent some time checking reviews of these AKG K451 headphones, and found conflicting comments. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic, but the AK451's are sadly far from an improvement... The K451's are (very) muddy in the mid and high's, far too bass heavy, boxy and echoic, present a cramped-to-the-point-of-claustrophobia sound stage about as big as a postage stamp and are nothing even close to transparent or detailed. These would be my first considered purchase in the reasonable-quality area after becoming fed up with lousy fidelity from mainstream mp3 crapola. I bought the QLS and the AKG's simultaneously, so I'm not entirely sure which exactly the qualities emanate from, but I'll hazard a guess. They'll have to improve considerably if they are not to end up on ebay, or in the bin... Perhaps they are terribly subject to batch variation, or they have somehow changed the drivers since this review. This can be the only explanation for such an apparently misleading award? Perhaps one for WHF to persue with AKG?
