Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens Review

www.the-digital-picture.com

I have to admit, when the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens was announced, I was less than enthusiastic over a new short focal length macro lens compatible only with the EF-S lens mount Digital SLRs. But now that I've had a chance to use it, I think the EF-S 60mm Macro is a very nice lens. Canon must believe that the 60 macro is durable as they include only a piece of double-thick corrugated cardboard and a bubble wrap bag for padding in the box. The lens is relatively small and quite light - it feels nicely balanced on the Canon 350D/Digital Rebel XT. The design looks and feels modern. Pictured above from left to right are the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens, Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Lens. Autofocus shows its technologically modern performance - it is fast, quiet and accurate. The EF-S 60mm Macro incorporates Canon's excellent USM (Ultrasonic Motor) with FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing. An internal focusing design is used. The lens does not change length while focusing nor does the front element rotate - a big plus when using the compatible Canon MR-14ex and Canon MT-24EX Macro Flashes. Optically, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens performs well. It is very sharp wide open (even in the corners) and slightly sharper stopped down. It is at least as sharp as the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens and the EF 180mm f/3.5L USM lens.

The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM is the first true Macro lens in the EF-S series. A dynamic, compact, fast-focusing lens, it provides dramatic detail that goes beyond the human eye. See full specification  Portrait photographers will enjoy working with the large aperture, which narrows depth of field and creates beautiful background blur, making your subject stand out with dramatic effect. The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM adds enormous versatility to your kit while adding little weight. Its near-silent Ultra Sonic Motor provides super-fast precision auto-focusing with full-time manual override. Over 60 years of optical engineering has gone into producing a lens that delivers exacting picture quality standards. Canon lens technologies combine to produce high corner-to-corner resolution, brightness, contrast and balanced colour reproduction throughout all focusing distances. Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements with Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off the camera sensor. Having an effective focal length of approximately 96mm in 35mm format, it produces breathtaking close-up results. A minimum focusing distance of just 20cm gets you super close to your subject, filling the frame with the subject in the highest detail you require. The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM works in harmony with EF-S mount EOS cameras to let you explore an exciting new photographic dimension.
