The Canon PowerShot G7 X III is the third in a series of 1″-type sensor compacts aimed at smartphone camera upgraders and enthusiast photographers looking for a small second camera. Its core photography features – notably its fast 24-100mm equivalent F1.8-2.8 lens – are very similar to the G7 X II that preceded it, but Canon has given the Mark III a new Stacked CMOS sensor and Digic 8 processor that together promise better image quality and performance. As with several recent Canon cameras – both compact and ILC – the G7 X Mark III can shoot Raw bursts at 30 frames per second. And it can do so for quite a while, with the camera displaying a bar on the left side of the display representing the buffer capacity. The biggest ‘party trick’ on the G7 X Mark III is its ability to stream live video over YouTube. At the time of writing it’s a pain to get working, but if you can get past the random, unexplained error messages (both on the camera and Canon Image Gateway site) and frequent low bandwidth issues, it does work as advertised.

Pros who reach for a big camera with changeable lenses for work may want something smaller for more casual outings. A smartphone may suffice for some, but if you prefer the ergonomics and the handling of a traditional camera, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III ($749.99) is worth a look. It's not our absolute favorite in the category, but it is a very capable compact. If you can spend a bit more, think about our Editors' Choice, also from Canon, the $900 G5 X Mark II, which has a bit more zoom power and an EVF. Pressing Q brings up an on-screen menu with additional options, giving you quick access to photo and video settings, as well as control over the in-lens neutral density filter. Canon does a good job taking advantage of the touch screen. Canon has long supported direct transfer of photos from a camera to certain web services via its Image Gateway platform, but it's a feature we've found many photographers ignore. If you're transferring an image wirelessly, it's more often to your phone.

Press this button when in any of the capture modes and left/right toolbars that will be familiar to Canon users appear on the screen, offering a toolbar at the bottom with further options when you come to rest on a particular setting.
