I've been testing the Canon Pixma Pro 100 printer over the last week and after putting it through its paces with LOTS of prints, I'm anxious to give you my review of this very powerful printer at an attractive price point. In short, although the cost of ink for the Canon Pixma Pro 100 is especially high, the printer itself is absolutely fantastic. It prints rich color borderless prints up to 13×19″ (A3+), and some of the best black and white prints I've seen. It comes with a very useful and well-designed plugin for Lightroom that makes printing easy, and the wireless feature makes it easy to use. But the printer also comes with built-in ICC profiles which you'll see available in Photoshop and Lightroom as soon as you install the printer. The profiles are specific to each type of paper. Since I almost always print on Canon luster paper, it's nice to have it right there. The Pro 100 uses dye-based inks. In contrast to pigment based inks in most printers, dye based inks claim slightly improved color saturation, but at the expense of durability and color fastness of the ink over a long period of time. However, Canon is boasting 100 years of life in these inks.

Both models have been designed primarily for photo enthusiasts and feature a similar body design to the PIXMA Pro-1, which we reviewed in January 2012. The PIXMA Pro-100. (Source: Canon.) The ink tanks are the same size and have a capacity of approximately 13 ml. Replacement cartridges are priced at AU$25.99 each (or US$16.99 MSRP from Canon USA). Canon offers bundled sets of replacement cartridges at a discount for some PIXMA printers but we couldn’t find any for the Pro-100 when this review was written. Canon’s Photo Paper Plus Glossy II has an attractive gloss surface but appears to be comparatively free of optical brighteners as its base colour is noticeably creamier. Prints on this surface looked nice and details were well resolved, but colours didn’t ‘jump’ as they did with the prints on Pro Platinum Paper and prints looked dull when compared side-by-side with those on Pro Platinum Paper.

We decided to start with the Pro-100 because we remembered a remark Canon’s Katsuichi Shimizu made in an interview with Dave at the Pro-1 launch. Today’s dye technology, he said, has “a 300 year lifespan, and the fading durability is almost identical to pigment. But in the minds of photographers, a printer must be pigment-based to sell.” · In our Pro-1 review we found that the pigment was not as brilliant as the dyes used in the Pro9000 Mark II so we have been anxious to try a Pro dye printer. The black foreground was gloriously handled on the R3000, a middle gray mess on the Pro-1 and a bit darker on the Pro-100. That, as we suggested in our Pro-1 review, is more about how the ink soaks into the paper than it is about the printer. And to prove it, we printed the image on Canon’s Pro Luster sheet. Canon shipped both the Pro-10 pigment and Pro-100 dye printers to us for review. Our first black and white on the Pro-100 was from a color image that Print Studio Pro converted into a black and white. So we didn’t fiddle with the tonality at all. We printed it on Canon’s Photo Paper Pro Luster. Black & White. Epson R3000 (left) focused on highlights, Pro-100 on shadow detail.

If this is your opinion, then almost certainly what you're looking at and liking is the set of automatic corrections that places like Shutterfly (which calls them "VividPics") make before they print. The Pro-100 is less aggressive in this respect. If you manually make appropriate corrections (digital darkroom work) and use a proper color-managed workflow and apply the right ICC profile, then the Pro-100's quality crushes what you get from Shutterfly or Snapfish. ... Red River has many fans, but suppose you use Canon paper, buying 8.5x11 inch Canon photo paper from B&H will set you back another $0.42 or so for Glossy II, Semi-Gloss, or Luster. The Pro-100 uses 8 cartridges of 13 ml each; it's hardly fair to compare that to a printer that uses 4 cartridges of 6 ml each. I'd bet heavily that neither the photo quality of your prints nor their ability to withstand fading (over time / with exposure to light) will be anywhere near as good with what you ordered as it would be with genuine Canon ink, especially on genuine Canon photo paper.
