They're the reason you can't use old AT&T phones on Verizon's network and vice versa. But what does CDMA vs. GSM really mean for you? Verizon does it because historically, with CDMA, it could control which phones were on its network, and it wants to keep as much of that control as possible. AT&T and T-Mobile don't in part because in the GSM era, the GSM spec meant they had to accept anyone with a compatible phone. Apple's first iPhone with 4G voice was the iPhone 6, from 2014. While it's annoying to have to switch out an older phone because of this network transition, it's far from sudden. There's no technological difference between "CDMA" and "GSM" carriers any more in the age of 4G LTE and 5G. T-Mobile will shut down 3G GSM/UMTS in July 2022. It has not set a date to turn off 2G, but has greatly reduced its coverage and quality. T-Mobile will shut down the 3G CDMA network used by some Sprint and Boost customers on March 31, 2022. Verizon will shut down its 3G CDMA network on December 31, 2022. In the twilight years of these networks, they're being turned down to levels primarily designed to support devices like electric meters and vending machines. That means 2G and 3G reception and call quality will likely be poor, even before the formal shutdowns.

I remember a while ago when buying iPhones, you would tell them which carrier you had, and they would either give you a CDMA or GSM phone. They were otherwise identical except for this wireless chip or whatever it’s called. It also meant for example, if you bought a phone that was meant to work for Verizon for example (I think this was CDMA) you couldn’t switch to T-Mobile for example (I think is GSM) by just switching SIM cards because your phone would actually be technologically unable to access the network of the other carrier. It also meant that Verizon phones wouldn’t work in Europe because Europe only uses GSM (I think), so even if you got a sim card in Europe, your phone just didn’t work with the network there. And a phone bought in Europe would be incompatible with Verizon’s network in the US. But is that still the case? Seems like the CDMA and GSM tech are old now and maybe the 5G is more universal? So, are there different wireless chips in iPhones depending on your carrier? This GSM and CDMA thing is only a concern with the 7 series, 8 series, and X. So Verizon customers (or customers using Verizon's phone lines, such as Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum, Visable, possibly Straight Talk/Tracfone, etc) need to be mindful about buying phones in this range. Some 7/7+/8/8+/X series iPhones are "GSM only" which means they will NEVER be compatible with Verizon, even if there aren't carrier restrictions. You can tell the difference based on the model number of the iPhone (all model numbers start with the letter A). For instance, the A1660 is the GSM+CDMA model for iPhone 7 (so would work on Verizon) while A1778 is GSM only iPhone 7.
