The market for the original iPhone (iPhone 2G/1st Gen) has diverged into two distinct segments: a high-stakes investment market for sealed units and a niche "vintage tech" market for functional or repairable devices. While "cheap" units still exist, they are increasingly rare as collectors drive up prices for even heavily used devices. Bgr Fortune

Market Pricing & Trends

The value of a first-generation iPhone is dictated almost entirely by its seal integrity and storage capacity. Silicon

Grade	Price Range	Key Value Drivers
Collector Grade (Sealed)	$40,000 – $190,000+	Original factory plastic wrap, 4GB model rarity (sold for only 2 months). Silicon Fortune
Vintage Grade (Used/Working)	$75 – $250	Functional screen, matching serial box, original iOS 1.0 firmware. Ebay Bgr
Parts Grade (Broken/Untested)	$20 – $50	Screen for logic board salvage, housing parts, or charging docks. Ebay

Key Market Insights

* The "4GB Premium": The 4GB model was discontinued shortly after launch in 2007 due to poor sales, making it the rarest variant. A sealed 4GB unit can be worth 3x to 5x more than the 8GB version. Silicon Ebay

* Firmware Value: Units that were never updated and still run iPhone OS 1.0 command a significant premium over updated versions, as they serve as digital "time capsules." Silicon Facebook

* Technical Obsolescence: These devices run on 2G (EDGE) networks, which have been decommissioned by most global carriers. Consequently, they cannot be used for calls or cellular data and are primarily display pieces or Wi-Fi-only devices. Ebay Youtube

Sourcing "Cheap" Units

To find the lowest-cost units for parts or casual collection, experts recommend avoiding "collector" keywords and focusing on platforms where items are treated as e-waste:

* Facebook Marketplace & Local Thrift: Often yield deals under $100 from sellers who view them as old, unusable phones rather than collectibles. Reddit

* Keyword Strategy: Search for `Model A1203`, `iPhone Edge`, or `Untested iPhone 2G` to find units priced for repair rather than investment. Reddit

* Condition Warning: Be wary of swollen batteries ("spicy pillows"), which are common in these 19-year-old devices and can crack the internal components and housing. Ifixit
