The unit felt like a small tablet with motorcycle-specific features. As we rolled through the countryside at highway speeds, the maps were responsive, and the music controls worked flawlessly. The vibrant display remained legible even in direct sunlight. I’d never had an infotainment unit this bright or responsive; it made my previous basic system seem primitive. This STARVIS‑class sensor is known for good low‑light performance, which helps explain why the AIO 5 Lite can capture usable footage at night despite headlight glare. The Chigee AIO 5 Lite costs about $400–$450, which is a significant investment compared to the inexpensive, basic unit I had before. However, the value becomes clearer when you consider the features it replaces.

At the time we went to press — Chigee’s prices vary according to the loonie’s foreign exchange rate — the base AIO-5 Lite lists for about $850 in Canada. For those like me that don’t require the dashcam function, you can buy a version called the AIO-5 Play sans cameras for about $570. There’s also a new XR2 system that keeps the two cameras but uses a smaller 4.3-inch screen with a few less features that retails for $550. You can save a specific recording — which you can pre-set to be in 1, 2 or 3-minute increments — but it is the most fiddly function in the Chigee’s operating system. Worse yet is that, when you do later go searching for the short vids that you recorded, they are lost in all the automatically recorded garbage which, if you have a 256GB card in there, is about 16 hours worth of footage. In other words, using the AIO-5’s as a simple video camera is compromised by its programming as a dashcam. On the other hand, it’s obvious Chigee designed the camera system as a safety device. The footage from both cameras is automatically saved if an accident is detected. And likewise, if your motorcycle is jostled when parked, the AIO-5 Lite will automatically save the event. Judging from the company’s promotional literature, the AIO-5 was designed primarily for use on naked bikes and its five-inch screen is perfectly sized to fit on a handlebar. It appears I wasn’t the only one that made the suggestion, because Chigee announced a new AIO-6 version with a six-inch screen at this year’s EICMA show.

I’d really like to see Chigee introduce a physical button press to ‘lock’ a specific recording and file it separately. That way, if something happens that you want to keep, it’ll be a lot easier to find and it won’t be overwritten. It’d be easy to implement too, with – for instance – a long press of one of the buttons on top of the device. The ‘Caution’ banner appears when another vehicle is in your blind spot · One of the benefits of the AIO-5 Lite’s front and rear cameras is that the screen unit processes this data to provide warnings in the form of a red ‘caution’ banner that appears on the left or right of the screen. There’s also a BMW-specific version for £69.99 that allows you to use the Wonder Wheel (if fitted). I’ve not tried this though, so can’t comment on its effectiveness. As standard, the Chigee AIO-5 Lite’s screen seems reasonably hard, but not scratch resistant (I tested it with a screwdriver). The Chigee AIO-5 Lite’s screen is very clear and bright, being easily readable even in strong sunlight. The auto-brightness feature works very well, dimming automatically at night, but I did find that on one very bright day when my lid was casting a shadow over the device, it dimmed to the point that it was barely visible. This is a nice feature, but also very valuable on bikes that briefly cut their auxiliary output while the engine is fired up, so avoiding an annoying fresh boot-up. The Chigee AIO-5 Lite takes 12 seconds to get to its home screen, then another 20 more to load Android Auto and get to your mapping.
