Cisco 7606
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
The Cisco 7606 router is currently classified as a legacy "workhorse" in the networking market. Having reached its final End-of-Service-Life (EoSL) in April 2021, it has transitioned from a primary service provider edge router to a niche solution for secondary markets and specific legacy infrastructures Router-SwitchCisco.
Product Lifecycle & Support
The Cisco 7606 series has fully completed its lifecycle milestones. Support for most variants, including the 7606-S, concluded between 2017 and 2021 Router-SwitchLayer23-Switch.
- Last Date of Support: April 30, 2021 (for standard AC bundles).
- Migration Path: Cisco officially recommends moving to the Cisco ASR 1000 Series for modern edge routing or the Catalyst 6500-E/6800 for high-density switching CiscoCisco.
Market Trends & Demand (2024–2026)
Despite its age, the 7606 maintains steady demand in the refurbished and secondary markets, which are projected to grow at a CAGR of ~4.6% through 2033 Custommarketinsights.
- Legacy WAN Termination: It remains one of the few stable platforms for terminating older protocols like ATM, POS, and T1/T3, which are expensive to support on newer hardware Spectra.
- Maintenance & Spares: Utilities and government agencies with "frozen" infrastructure continue to source 7606 chassis and RSP720 modules to maintain existing systems without costly forklift upgrades SpectraNetworkoutlet.
- Lab & Education: The platform is highly sought after for CCIE certification labs due to its low cost (chassis often range from $200–$600 refurbished) and comprehensive MPLS/BGP feature set Spectra.
Technical Capabilities
The chassis offers a 6-slot form factor in a 7RU size, providing a balance of port density and space efficiency for its era NetboxlabsSpectra.
- Throughput: Up to 240 Gbps system capacity with 40 Gbps per-slot fabric Cisco.
- Key Modules: The RSP720 remains the most critical component in the secondary market, enabling the highest performance levels for this series CiscoSpectra.
Current B2B availability is primarily focused on refurbished line cards (like the 7600-ES series) and newer ISR/ASR series alternatives, as original 7606 stock has largely moved to specialized used-equipment vendors .
Would you like me to find specific refurbished suppliers in your region or compare the 7606 with the ASR 1000 series?
