The phrase "Cisco Catalyst 2690" is typically a typo for the Cisco Catalyst 2960 series, which has been an industry standard for enterprise access layer switching for over a decade. As of 2026, this product family is in its final phase of existence in the market, having been fully superseded by the Cisco Catalyst 9200 series. Cisco Servnetuk

Product Overview & Specifications

The Catalyst 2960 series consists of fixed-configuration, stackable Gigabit Ethernet switches. The most recent and widely deployed models were the 2960-X and 2960-XR. Cisco

* Legacy Architecture: These switches run on classic monolithic Cisco IOS, which is stable but lacks the modern programmability of newer systems. Reddit

* Key Features: Support for 24 or 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, Power over Ethernet (PoE+), and stacking via FlexStack-Plus (80 Gbps). Cisco Servnetuk

* Successor (Catalyst 9200): The 9200 series offers double the stacking bandwidth (160 Gbps), modern Cisco IOS-XE, and enhanced hardware-based security like MACsec-256. Cisco Servnetuk

Lifecycle Status & Market Trends

The primary market trend for the 2960 series in 2026 is total obsolescence.

* End of Support: The Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR reached their End of Sale years ago, with the Last Date of Support (LDoS) set for October 31, 2025. Servnetuk

* Security Risk: Running these switches in production post-2025 exposes organizations to significant security vulnerabilities, as Cisco no longer releases firmware patches or bug fixes. Cisco

* Secondary Market: There is still high availability for refurbished or "New Old Stock" (NOS) units on B2B platforms, primarily serving organizations that need exact replacements to keep legacy networks running short-term. Prices for these units have dropped significantly, often ranging from $160–$300 for basic 24-port PoE models.

Market Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Current B2B market data highlights three distinct tiers for buyers:

Category	Typical Pricing	Use Case
Legacy Replacement (2960-X)	$160 - $300	Short-term fixes for existing setups; no long-term support.
Budget/SMB Successor (C1000)	$560 - $1,100	Best for small businesses needing reliable, simple Layer 2 switching.
Enterprise Standard (C9200L)	$1,200 - $2,200	Recommended upgrade for performance, security, and long-term support.
