The term 'Class 2 microphone' (or sound level meter) refers to a specific grade of acoustic measurement instrument defined by the international standard IEC 61672-1. These devices are the "industrial standard" for occupational health and safety (OHS) and general environmental monitoring, offering a balance between professional accuracy and cost-efficiency SonavyxSvantek.

1. Technical Insights: Class 2 vs. Class 1

Class 2 instruments are designed for field use where extreme laboratory precision is not required. The main differences lie in tolerance and environmental resilience:

* Accuracy: Class 2 has an acceptance limit of ±1.4 dB (at 1 kHz), compared to ±1.1 dB for Class 1 SonavyxSvantek.

* Frequency Range: Class 2 is restricted to 20 Hz – 8 kHz, whereas Class 1 extends to 16 kHz to capture high-frequency industrial noise SonavyxCirrusresearch.

* Temperature Stability: Class 2 meters are rated for 0°C to 40°C. For extreme outdoor or industrial heat, Class 1 is required (-10°C to 50°C) SonavyxSvantek.

* Calibration: For any measurement to be legally defensible, the Class 2 meter must be field-calibrated before and after use with a compliant sound calibrator (IEC 60942) Sonavyx.

2. Market Trends & Disruptions

* The MEMS Revolution: A significant shift is occurring from traditional condenser capsules to MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) microphones. MEMS are shock-resistant, energy-efficient, and cheaper to produce, allowing professional-grade Class 2 accuracy in smaller, more rugged formats SonavyxSvantek.

* Mobile & Cloud Connectivity: The market is moving toward "App-based" hardware. Instead of standalone handheld units, users are increasingly using USB Measurement Microphones (e.g., miniDSP UMIK-2) paired with smartphone apps for real-time cloud reporting and remote monitoring SonavyxSvantek.

* Software-Defined Analysis: Features like RT60 (reverberation time) and STIPA (speech intelligibility) are now delivered as optional software modules on the same Class 2 hardware, expanding their use in architectural acoustics and school safety SonavyxSvantek.

3. Pricing & Sourcing Landscape

The market is divided into two tiers based on user needs:

* Professional Tier ($1,500 – $2,500): Dominated by brands like Svantek, Cirrus Research, and Casella. These are fully integrated, "legal-for-trade" meters used for OHS compliance Sonavyx.

* Sourcing Tier ($30 – $600): In the B2B market, Class 2 compliant sensors and USB measurement mics are widely available for integration into larger IoT or smart city noise monitoring networks .

Provides details of the tests necessary to verify conformance to all mandatory specifications given in IEC 61672-1:2002 for conventional sound level meters, integrating-averaging sound level meters and integrating sound level meters. The current standard for sound level meters, IEC 61672, is published in three parts. Here our explanation of IEC 61672 and what these parts mean for sound level meters. The first part, Part 1, details the performance characteristics that a Class 1 or Class 2 sound level meter should have. Describes procedures for periodic testing of conventional, integrating-averaging, and integrating sound level meters conforming to the class 1 or class 2 requirements of IEC 61672-1:2002. Periodic tests described in this part of IEC 61672 apply to sound level meters for which the model has been, or has not been, pattern approved by an independent testing organization responsible for pattern approvals and in accordance with the test procedures of IEC 61672-2:2003. Periodic tests described in this part of IEC 61672 also apply to sound level meters for which the manufacturer claims conformance to the requirements of IEC 61672-1.

Type and Class of a Sound Level Meter - A Definition

www.noisemeters.com

The Type or Class of a sound level meter describes its accuracy as defined by the relevant international standards - Class 1 is more accurate than Class 2. The older standard IEC 60651 referred to the grade as "Type", whereas the new standard IEC 61672 refers to it as the "Class". Although older meters meeting the IEC 60651 (and IEC 60804) can continue to be used for most applications, when purchasing a new meter you should get one that meets the new standard IEC 61672. There can be other reasons for selecting the class of meter. Our Class 1 meters tend to measure lower levels due the sensitivity of the microphone capsule. This is particularly relevant for environmental noise surveys where low noise levels are being measured.
