Dell's mainstream Dimension 5100 looks good from the outside, but surprisingly limited configuration options dampen our enthusiasm. With this release, Dell updates the look of its midrange home PC, and we like what we see. The case has been recast in a silver-and-white design, and a removable side panel makes accessing the internal components easier than ever. Dell's midrange line gets a new look, thanks to an improved BTX-based case design. Most home users will find enough customizable options to build a system perfect for them, but gamers should trade up to Dell's premium lines. The Dell Dimension 5100, like its predecessor, the Dimension 4700, is a well-priced, decently powered option for family-room computing. In addition to a striking new design, the 5100 adds modern essentials such as a BTX motherboard and a 64-bit CPU that should keep you from having to replace your system for a few years. You can configure a Dell Dimension 5100 for less than $700, but our test system included the Media Centerversion of Windows XP, dual TV tuners, two-piece speakers, and a 15-inch LCD, among other upgrades, that bring the price to a still reasonable $1,136. Even so, the Dimension 5100's lack of a dual-core CPU makes the trim 5100C a better option.

The Dell Dimension 5100 will keep general users, budding multimedia mavens, and students happy, all for a sweet price just under $1,000 With its $999 price with 15-inch monitor, the Dell Dimension 5100 fits squarely in the home- and student-PC space, replacing the popular Dimension 4700. The 5100 is built on the forward-looking BTX platform and is quieter, to boot. It's ideal for budding multimedia mavens, students, and budget-minded general computer users who want more than a bare-bones machine. The silver and white exterior is significantly different from the old Dell cases. Dell finally offers an integrated media card reader, handy for today's multicamera households. On the back, you'll notice something missing: old-school PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports. That said, the seven USB ports should more than suffice. The 5100 we tested came with Dell's USB multimedia keyboard and mouse. You won't be playing Doom 3 and Halo on the 5100 at 1,600-by-1,200 resolutions, but Halo is play-able at lower resolutions. You'll need to turn off most of the bells and whistles on Doom 3, but we were able to get a playable frame rate. The included 15-inch LCD monitor is a little small (competitors have 17-inch displays), but the multimedia software bundle—including the very Windows Media Center–like Dell Media Experience and WordPerfect Office—make the 5100 a good value out of the box.
