Dell Studio 1747
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
The Dell Studio 1747, released in late 2009, was a high-performance "desktop replacement" laptop positioned between Dell's Inspiron and premium XPS lines. As of 2026, it is considered a legacy device with a specialized niche in the secondary market due to its unique audio features and large display, though it faces significant modern technical hurdles.
Product Profile & Specifications
The Studio 1747 was among the first laptops to feature Intel's "Clarksfield" quad-core mobile processors, aiming for workstation-level performance NotebookcheckTechradar.
* Performance: Typically equipped with the Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6 GHz base, 2.8 GHz Turbo) and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (1GB VRAM) IcecatSpiceworks.
* Display & Audio: Featured a 17.3-inch HD+ (1600x900) or FHD (1080p) screen and a premium JBL 2.1 audio system with an integrated subwoofer, a standout feature for its era TechradarNotebookcheck.
* Expandability: Included dual hard drive bays, a slot-in optical drive, and broad connectivity (HDMI, DisplayPort, eSATA) Notebookcheck.
Market Trends & Legacy Insights (2026)
In the current market, the Studio 1747 is primarily traded as a refurbished or "for parts" unit rather than a primary workstation.
* Secondary Market Value: Pre-owned units are generally valued between $100 – $180 USD, depending on condition and whether they include the essential high-wattage power adapter EbayDell.
* OS Compatibility: Dell officially supports only up to Windows 7. While users have successfully updated to Windows 10/11, issues such as unresponsive touchscreens and driver incompatibilities are common DellJustanswer.
* Sourcing Challenge: Finding exact model matches (motherboards or chassis) is difficult. B2B listings often prioritize modern Latitude or Inspiron models, making component harvesting from consumer sites (like eBay) the primary sourcing method Ebay.
Critical Engineering Issues
Buyers and owners should be aware of several "fatal flaws" that defined this model's lifespan:
* Overheating: The Core i7 processor generates extreme heat (reaching 60°C/140°F on the bottom surface), often leading to thermal throttling and sudden shutdowns NotebookcheckJustanswer.
* Power Throttling: The original 90W adapter was insufficient, causing performance drops under load. A 130W adapter is mandatory for stable operation NotebookcheckDell.
* BIOS Reliability: Early units suffered from the "7 beeps problem" (motherboard/CPU failure), which required specific BIOS fixes (A04 and later) LaptopmagDell.
