The Tolino ecosystem has undergone a massive transformation in 2024, shifting to a Kobo-based hardware platform and an Android-based OS. It remains the dominant alternative to Amazon Kindle in Germany, maintaining a 40–45% market share .

Product Trends & Lineup (2024–2026)

The latest lineup focuses on color displays and note-taking capabilities, aiming to outpace Kindle in mainstream color adoption.

* Tolino Shine Color (2024): The first mainstream color model featuring a 6" E Ink Kaleido 3 screen, targeted at comic and manga readers .

* Tolino Vision Color (2024): A 7" device with ergonomic buttons and stylus support for note-taking, competing directly with the Kindle Scribe but in a more portable form factor .

* Tolino Shine (5th Gen): The entry-level black-and-white model using the latest E Ink Carta 1300 technology for improved contrast and speed .

* Eco-Friendly Design: A significant trend for 2025 is the shift toward sustainability, with new models utilizing recycled plastics and designed for easier repairability .

Market Insights

* Germany's Unique Duopoly: Unlike most global markets dominated by Kindle, Germany sees a neck-and-neck battle. Tolino’s strength is its alliance with local retailers like Thalia, Hugendubel, and Weltbild .

* The "Open System" Advantage: Tolino’s support for EPUB and Onleihe (the German public library lending system) remains its biggest USP, as Kindle still does not natively support Onleihe .

* Interest Trends: Search interest for Tolino peaks significantly during November/December, coinciding with holiday gifting, often reaching nearly half the search volume of Kindle during these months .

B2B Sourcing Note

Tolino devices are proprietary to the Tolino Alliance. For wholesale or sourcing, buyers typically need to partner with Alliance members or look for OEM/ODM manufacturers like Netronix, who have historically produced hardware for both Tolino and Kobo. Standard B2B searches for "Tolino" branded stock generally yield accessories rather than the devices themselves .
