Headphones - Wikipedia

An external audio splitter can be used to allow connecting another wired headphone in a parallel circuit, which splits the audio signal to share with another participant. Some headphone cords are equipped with a potentiometer for volume control. Various types of specially designed headphones or earphones are used in the field of audiology for establishing hearing thresholds, medically diagnosing hearing loss, identifying other hearing related disease, and monitoring hearing status in occupational hearing conservation programs. In this case, an external headphone amplifier may be beneficial. Sensitivity is a measure of how effectively an earpiece converts an incoming electrical signal into an audible sound. It thus indicates how loud the headphones are for a given electrical drive level. It can be measured in decibels of sound pressure level per milliwatt (dB (SPL)/mW) or decibels of sound pressure level per volt (dB (SPL) / V). Both definitions are widely used, often interchangeably. They are electroacoustic transducers, which convert an electrical signal to a corresponding sound. Headphones let a single user listen to an audio source privately, in contrast to a loudspeaker, which emits sound into the open air for anyone nearby to hear. Headphones are also known as earphones or, colloquially, cans. Commonly used models are the Telephonics Dynamic Headphone (TDH) 39, TDH-49, and TDH-50. In-the-ear or insert style earphones are used more commonly today as they provide higher levels of interaural attenuation, introduce less variability when testing 6,000 and 8,000 Hz, and avoid testing issues resulting from collapsed ear canals. Along with Etymotic Research ER-2A insert earphones, the Sennheiser HDA300 and Koss HV/1A circumaural earphones are the only models that have reference equivalent threshold sound pressure level values for the extended high frequency range as described by ANSI standards.

In-Ear Monitor, Earphone, Headphone, Earbud…What’s the Difference?

We at 64 Audio frequently hear many different terms when customers refer to their personal listening equipment. Headphones, earphones, in-ear monitors, earbuds… they are all the same right? Although all are popular pieces of audio gear, they are actually very different from each other. But what exactly are the differences between each of these devices? Let’s dive in and give you a better understanding. In-ear monitors, also called earphones or in-ear headphones, are rapidly gaining popularity in the music industry. Like headphones, they also seal the ear to eliminate ambient noise and retain bass. In universal-fit pairs of earphones, this is often fitted with foam or silicone cushions for retention and comfort. In custom-fit models, the protrusion is custom molded to the ear canal of the user. Technical innovations in earphones continue to improve their quality and versatility. These devices, nicknamed “cans,” are speakers attached to a headband. They are often equipped with serious noise-canceling properties that enhance the listening experience by eliminating ambient sound. Headphones can either rest on top of the ears (supra-aural) or around the ears (circumaural) of the wearer. Due to their size, headphones can house larger, more powerful drivers that tend to outcompete earphones, primarily in bass-frequency response.

Earbuds vs. Earphones: What's the Difference? – Klipsch Canada

Engineers made molds of various ear canals and reached the same conclusion - ear canals are oval-shaped, not round. Andrew Doerr, Klipsch’s Engineering Program Director, says the evolution of making in-ear headphones more comfortable began back with the X series. “We now had the smallest ear tips, nozzle, and housing in one product,” he says. Doerr says his team is always hunting for improvements to make sure the comfort increases every time a new iteration of Klipsch earphones comes to life. There’s one key difference between earbuds and earphones. Earbuds rest on the concha – the opening outside the ear canal. Earphones – also known as in-ear headphones – are inserted in the ear canal. While this may seem like a minor detail, one is better for comfort, durability, and sound quality. However, if sound quality is your priority, earbuds aren’t the best choice because the ambient noise causes weaker bass. You also have to play your music loud enough to overcome the outside noise. Earphones go past your concha and extend into your ear canal, thanks to silicone tips attached to the earphones themselves. Ear canals are not one-size-fits-all either. Unfortunately, many competitors created round earbuds without giving much thought to the actual shape of the human ear canal. Those become uncomfortable in a hurry and no one wants to interrupt their workout to tinker with their earbuds. Doerr says the Klipsch oval ear tip design means our earphones won’t fall out the way cheap round earbuds do.
