Color photography - Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org

Color photography has been the dominant form of photography since the 1970s, with monochrome photography mostly relegated to niche markets such as fine art photography. Color photography was attempted beginning in the 1840s. Early experiments were directed at finding a "chameleon substance" which would assume the color of the light falling on it. Some early results, typically obtained by projecting a solar spectrum directly onto the sensitive surface, seemed to promise eventual success, but the comparatively dim image formed in a camera required exposures lasting for hours or even days. After a transition period centered around 1994–2006, color film was relegated to a niche market by inexpensive multi-megapixel digital cameras that can shoot both in monochrome as well as color. By 1980, black-and-white film in the formats used by typical snapshot cameras, as well as commercial developing and printing service for it, had nearly disappeared. Instant color film was introduced by Polaroid in 1963. Like Polaroid's contemporary instant black-and-white film, their first color product was a negative-positive peel-apart process which produced a unique print on paper. A number of variations were devised and marketed during the first half of the 20th century, some of them short-lived, others, such as the Trichrome Carbro process, enduring for several decades. Because some of these processes allow very stable and light-fast coloring matter to be used, yielding images which can remain virtually unchanged for centuries, they are still not quite completely extinct. The production of photographic three-color prints on paper was pioneered by Louis Ducos du Hauron, whose comprehensive 1868 French patent also included the basic concepts of most of the color photographic processes which were subsequently developed. An Ives one-shot camera is described and illustrated on pages 30–33 and a horizontally oriented multiple back attachment is illustrated on page 37. ↑ Hanson, David (2013). A Short History of Camera Color

Director of photography Art Adams knew he wanted to look through cameras for a living at the age of 12. After ten years in Hollywood working on feature films, TV series, commercials, music videos, visual effects and docs he returned to his native San Francisco Bay Area, where he currently shoots commercials and high-end corporate marketing and branding projects. When Art isn’t shooting he consults on product design and marketing for a number of motion picture equipment manufacturers. Somehow Panasonic could reproduce accurate and beautiful secondary colors that other cameras couldn’t touch, like purple and yellow. This trend continued in the original Varicam, an HD camera that only captured 720p but was immensely popular because the picture looked so good that many were willing to give up 1080p resolution in favor of amazing color. Color is something that has fascinated me for a long time. This is what I’ve noticed about trends in cameras over the years. We shot in a kitchen lined with muted green tiles and their color was dead-on perfect on the monitors. Most cameras would distort them by making them more saturated or shifting them a little toward blue, but what we saw by eye is what the cameras saw as well. Panasonic took the market by storm with its beautiful but subdued flesh tones and rich, accurate secondary colors.

Sculptural folds N1: Minimalist 3D Plaster Relief Canvas Artwork, Neutral Cream Stone Aesthetic Wall Decor for Modern Homes ... Do you know when was color photography invented? To talk about color photography in an era of countless filters, photo apps and high-quality cameras on pretty much every mobile phone nowadays perhaps seems like an obsolete thing to do, but what if we told you that the true evolution of the medium in this field came only a few decades ago? One very important difference between monochromatic and color photography is this: in black and white you suggest; in color you state. Much can be implied by suggestion, but the statement demands certainty… absolute certainty. Louis Ducos Du Hauron’s Chromographoscope in 1874. It could be used either as a camera or an additive viewer. Image via Coote, Jack H. (1993): The Illustrated History of Colour Photography. Surbiton, Surrey, Fountain Press · In the 1830s, the world got the very first photograph ever taken – the famous view from the window at Le Gras, taken by the great Nicéphone Niépce. The first commercially successful color photography process appeared on the market in 1907, when the French Lumière brothers, by then famous in the world of cinema, introduced the Lumière Autochrome. Their method involved special plates which, however, cost about as much as a dozen black-and-white plates of the same size. Nevertheless, millions of Autochrome plates were manufactured and used for a couple of decades, before the film-based versions appeared in the 1930s. The photographers of the early 20th century also had two types of color cameras at their disposal: one using a lens that could separate the incoming light through three different filters, thus taking three photographs at the same time, and the other introducing still exposed images one a time, but with a drop back that allowed photographers to quickly swap out filters and emulsion types. The “tripack” suggested by Louis Ducos du Hauron eventually found its purpose when the American company Eastman Kodak released the first modern “integral tripack” color film under the now famous name of Kodachrome. It had three layers of emulsion coated on a single base, each layer recording one of the three additive primaries, red, green, and blue. After introducing the iconic “you press the button, we do the rest” slogan, they asked that the film is simply loaded into the camera, exposed in an ordinary way, then mailed to Kodak for processing.

GoPro and other companies like it were instrumental in making these segments popular, and their products are now considered to be among the most sought-after stand-alone cameras. The global photography market was valued at USD 105.2 billion in 2023, and steady growth of 4.4% each year is expected to lift the market to USD 161.8 billion by 2030. This trend reflects rising demand for visual content, digital services, and professional imaging work across different regions. This article will disclose recent Camera statistics and their market trends. For the first time since 2017, the dedicated camera market has experienced growth, rising from 7.8 million units in 2023 to 8.3 million in 2024, a 6% increase. The 2024 lens sales amounted to 9.6 million units; that figure includes almost 4.5 million full-frame lenses and more than 5 million APS-C lenses, with both segments growing by approximately 5%. According to historical data from CIPA, the peak of camera shipments occurred during the 2000 to 2010 digital boom, when over 120 million units were sold, followed by a 94% decline between 2010 and 2023, largely due to the emergence of smartphones. 1900: Kodak launched the Brownie, a low-cost box camera that brought snapshot photography to the mass market. 1907: Autochrome Lumière became the first widely used practical color process for still photography. 1925: The Leica I was presented publicly, establishing the compact 35 mm format as a mainstream photographic system. 1935: Kodachrome color reversal film was introduced, advancing high-quality color photography for motion and still images. 1936: The Kine Exakta debuted as the first regular-production 35 mm single-lens reflex camera. The worldwide security camera market was valued at USD 18.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to exceed USD 48 billion by 2034. Home security cameras reached nearly USD 10 billion in 2024 and might reach USD 56.47 billion by 2033. More than half of U.S. households already use at least one security camera, indicating a general trend toward adoption.

Learn about the development of colour photography—from the very first experiments with hand-colouring to the mass production of commercially viable colour film. When taking a photograph, this screen was placed in the camera in front of the plate. After exposure and reversal processing, the black-and-white positive image was carefully placed in register with another filter screen. The result was a colour transparency which could be viewed by transmitted light (light that passes through an object). The Joly process was introduced commercially in 1895 and remained on the market for a few years. The colour filter simply needed to be changed after each exposure. This procedure could be made simpler through the use of a ‘repeating back’, a moving part of the camera which allowed filters of different colours to drop into place. A number of devices of this sort were marketed. On 15 April 1935, the first Kodachrome film went on sale for use in 16mm cine cameras. 35mm Kodachrome film was available on the American market in 1936, and the first supplies reached the UK in 1937.

Kodak and Agfa had their first successes on the market with commercially viable color reversal transparency film in the 1930s. In 1942 both companies introduced color negative film, and produced it under the brand names Agfacolor and Kodachrome until 2005 and 2009, respectively. The complicated development process could only be carried out in a lab and was difficult to control, and that fueled artists’ prejudices against the medium. If the final product was ultimately determined by chemicals and lab personnel, how could it be art, and how much of the work could the photographer claim as his own? In the 1960s Winogrand (1928–1984) began using color photography to articulate the decreasing distance between the object and the viewer. Toward the end of the 1970s, the young photographer Nan Goldin (*1953) started focusing her camera on herself and her personal surroundings. Color photography has its own place today in museums, exhibitions, and the art market. In 2006 Sotheby’s auctioned a work by German photographer Andreas Gursky for more than two million dollars. The medium has been booming since the 1980s, even though a decade earlier it was still not really an acknowledged art form. Actually, the photographs composed a precise image of the zeitgeist of the Nixon era, while at the same time promulgating the theory that a specific color-photography aesthetic could be derived from the qualities that apparently seemed to contradict their claim to be art: their casualness, the ordinary subjects, the photographs’ direct relationship with the reality they portrayed, and the way that every photograph reflects upon its own process of creation and the cultural history of color photography as a medium.
