Firmware Marlin
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
In 2026, Marlin Firmware remains the dominant engine for the global 3D printing market, particularly in the budget and mid-range segments, due to its standalone stability and cost-efficiency. However, the market is currently seeing a "Speed Divergence," where Klipper is rapidly capturing the high-performance and enthusiast sectors by enabling speeds of 300–600mm/s, compared to Marlin's practical limit of 100–200mm/s on 32-bit boards.
Key product trends include the universal shift to 32-bit architecture (e.g., BigTreeTech SKR and Octopus series) and the mandatory inclusion of Input Shaping to eliminate ghosting at high speeds. While Marlin offers rock-solid reliability, the rising consumer demand for automated calibration and web-based interfaces is pushing many manufacturers toward Klipper-compatible or hybrid hardware solutions. The attached report provides a detailed analysis of these market shifts, comparative performance data, and strategic sourcing insights for 2026.

The Future of Marlin Firmware | Scott Lahteine

Anyway, the important question for open source firmware like Marlin is whether companies will trend away from open-source and make closed firmware instead. As the landscape of 3D printing evolves, we see more companies grappling with the balance between open-source ideals and the practicalities of business. Klipper firmware has become the de facto choice for prosumer FDM 3D printers, with a desktop class processor for extra power, an onboard network host, and a full GNU/Linux stack providing full connectivity and limitless customizability. Marlin has always been by and for the community, and we remain dedicated to the hobbyist, tinkerer, and innovator. Experimentation and creativity outside of the mass market will be key to advancing 3D printing, motion control, and Marlin. The synergy that continues to exist between all the open source firmwares (Marlin, RepRapFirmware, Prusa Firmware, Klipper, and others) and their caretakers and communities demonstrates the uniting power of open-source collaboration. We’re all dedicated to the same ideals, and together we’ll continue to push the boundaries of 3D printing in our distinct and overlapping market sectors.

First created in 2011 for RepRap and Ultimaker by Erik van der Zalm et. al., today Marlin drives most of the world's 3D printers. For All the Boards! - Marlin supports a wide variety of 3D printers, including all RAMPS variants, and more.
Marlin (firmware) - Wikipedia

Marlin supports many different types of 3D printing robot platforms, including basic Cartesian, Core XY, Delta, and SCARA printers, as well as some other less conventional designs like Hangprinter and Beltprinter. In addition to 3D printers, Marlin is generally adaptable to any machine requiring control and interaction. Development continued at a slow pace while gaining in popularity and acceptance as a superior alternative to the other available firmware. By 2015, companies were beginning to introduce commercial 3D printers with Marlin pre-installed and contributing their improvements to the project. As of October 2022, Marlin was still under active development and continues to be very popular, claiming to be "the most widely used 3D printing firmware in the world." Some of the most successful companies using Marlin today are Ultimaker, LulzBot, Prusa Research, and Creality. Marlin firmware is not alone in the field of open source 3D printer firmware. Other popular open source firmware offerings include RepRap Firmware by Duet3D, Buddy Firmware by Prusa Research, and Klipper by the Klipper Foundation.
r/Reprap on Reddit: Marlin firware market share now and back in ...

Posted by u/sadr050t - 10 votes and 13 comments Hello. Its a common knowledge that the whole todays personal 3d-printing industry was born from RepRap project and particularly from Marlin firmware. But except general knowledge, are there any press articles or scientific publications with more factual details on this? For example, there was a boom of new personal 3d-printer projects in 2011-2014, and I'm sure most of them did use Marlin firmware with little changes or without changes at all. But is there a kind of research which estimates number of those projects (or at least points key players of that time) and gives details on software they used as firmware.
