DVD-RAM (DVD Random Access Memory) is a DVD-based disc specification presented in 1996 by the DVD Forum, which specifies rewritable DVD-RAM media and the appropriate DVD writers. DVD-RAM media have been used in computers as well as camcorders and personal video recorders since 1998. In May 2019, Panasonic, the only remaining manufacturer of DVD-RAM discs, announced that it would end production of DVD-RAM media by the end of that month, citing shrinking demand as the primary motivation. The last DVD-RAM Specification, DVD-RAM2 (also called RAM2 or Class 1), is not compatible with DVD drives that do not specifically allow reading DVD-RAM2 discs. DVD-RAM2 medium was brought to the market in Japan, but was not launched worldwide. If I had known they acted like this I would have had a few. And especially one for our DVD recorder on the TV. Instead, I used DVD+RW for all my storage needs. I think marketing was a big problem - they never really told you what these discs did. ... DVD-RAM was such a great idea, just far too few machines came with DVR-RAM writing support at the time. I wonder if, like Lightscribe, it was limited to only certain manufacturers. The tip about using a DVD-RAM disk with a DVD-Recorder is a great tip, as I happen to have a VCR/DVD-Recorder combo, with HDMI output (for all sources), that I'd like to experiment with, and that would be a great solution. It simply wasn't worth the time, effort or cost to erase content.
