Frsky Sbus
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
I have completed a comprehensive analysis of FrSky SBUS product and market trends for 2026. While SBUS remains a reliable legacy protocol widely used for fleet maintenance, it is being rapidly displaced by ExpressLRS (ELRS), which now commands nearly 90% of the FPV racing market due to its sub-4ms latency.
The attached report provides a detailed technical comparison of protocols, current market sentiment from platforms like Reddit and YouTube, and sourcing recommendations for both legacy support and modern high-performance builds. You will find data on top-performing receivers from brands like BetaFPV, RadioMaster, and FrSky, with prices for mainstream receivers ranging from $8.00 to $22.00.
Based on these market findings, you can explore the following next steps:

SBUS Protocol - Embedded Flight Software - WARG
uwarg-docs.atlassian.net
There are two different types of SBUS receivers that you can find on the market. The only difference between them is the way they use voltage to represent data. The two types are: Futaba - THE SBUS we are usually referring to, also the person’s name who developed this protocol. Futaba uses an inverted standard way to represent the digital signal, with high voltage to represent logical-low and low voltage to represent logical-high. Frsky - uses the standard way to represent the digital signal, with high voltage to represent logical-high and low voltage to represent logical-low. Suppose each byte is composed of 8 bits with IDs as follows [7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0] where bit 0 is the least significant bit. Then, if we probe the SBUS signal with an oscilloscope can see the following data as the least significant bit is transmitted first. SBUS is a bus protocol for receivers to send commands to servos. It works sort of similarly to UART, SBUS uses a single serial line to provide the 16 channels of control command. In this way, the MCU is able to recognize the Futaba SBUS from UART input.
FPV Receiver Protocols Compared: SBUS, CRSF, FPort, and ELRS — ...

There’s no reason to spec SBUS on a new build unless you’re deliberately maintaining compatibility with legacy hardware. ⚠️ Regulatory Notice: The choice of receiver protocol may affect your drone’s compliance with 2026 Remote ID requirements and frequency regulations. Mistake 4: Using SBUS for a racing build in 2026. SBUS was standard in 2017. In 2026, CRSF and ELRS cost the same or less, and the latency difference is measurable in lap times. For a racer who’s on the edge of a gate at 120 km/h, that difference is real — the quad responds to stick input two frames faster than SBUS. CRSF also supports full MAVLink telemetry passthrough, so your radio’s screen can display GPS coordinates, battery voltage per cell, and RSSI without any additional wiring. FPort is FrSky’s unified serial protocol — one wire for both channel data and telemetry, running at 115,200 baud. The downside is it only works within the FrSky ecosystem. If you switch radio brands, your receivers become paperweights. FPort also requires specific Betaflight configuration — the serial port must be set to “Serial RX” with FPort as the provider, and the receiver must be wired to a TX pad, not the SBUS pad.

FPV Protocols Explained (CRSF, SBUS, DSHOT, ACCST, PPM, PWM and ...

The most common protocol used in FPV right now would be CRSF, which is used by ExpressLRS, TBS Crossfire and Tracer. FrSky and other SBUS receivers should use SBUS. Spektrum Satellite receivers should use SPEKTRUM2048 or SPEKTRUM1024, depending on whether they are DSM2 or DSMX. Note that the SBUS signal in Frsky’s receivers is inverted, and therefore (normally) on F1 and F4 FC, there are dedicated SBUS input which indicates there is an inverter in place for the inverted SBUS signal. It’s very informative. BTW Will FrSky X4R receiver support normal flight controller boards like KK 2.1? ... X4R? Yes, X4R-SB? no it doesn’t. KK2 doesn’t support PPM or SBUS, only PWM. So you could connect the 4 PWM channels from X4R to KK2. X4R-SB only output 3 PWM channels plus 1 SBUS, so it’s not enough to control a quadcopter. Aka S.BUS or Serial BUS, is commonly used by Futaba and FrSky. It supports up to 16 channels using only one signal wire. SBUS signal should be connected to the RX pin of an UART.
FrSky Protocols Made Simple - We Explain And Demystify
inavfixedwinggroup.com
Depending on the radio you have, you’ll see the names like XJT, ISRM with FrSky, or Multi-Protocol with radios like the Jumper or RadioMaster. This internal module is 2.4ghz radio communication. The XJT module runs the ACCST protocol, and can use the modes below. You can see, this clone D8 receiver has SBUS but it’s limited to 8 channels. So for this example we are going to have a UART, and it is sending out some data which looks like 01001000 01101001. Most of what we use on our flight controllers communicate in this way. However, the FrSky receivers use inverted UARTS for their SBUS and S.Port connectors. That hopefully seems pretty straight forward. But FrSky decided to add one more level of confusion with the “inverted SBUS” and “inverted S.Port” pads on some receivers. So what do they mean by this? Well, we know that the SBUS and S.Port signals are inverted. If you have “inverted SBUS” and “inverted S.Port” pads on the receiver, like the R9 Slim+; you can just use those connections on any standard UART. Likewise, if you want to use F.Port, you should use the “inverted S.Port” pad and connect to any standard UART Tx. In our example we’ll use the pads for a FrSky R9mm.
SBUS Protocol

Quadrotor control framework developed by the Robotics and Perception Group - uzh-rpg/rpg_quadrotor_control The SBUS Protocol is a serial protocol that was developed by Futaba for hobby remote control applications. It is derived from the RS232 protocol but the voltage levels are inverted. Note: The voltage levels of SBUS are inverted. So while a 0 with a normal serial port is encoded with a low voltage, it is encoded with a high voltage with SBUS.
