Windows Mixed Reality is almost completely dead as a VR platform ... The consumer virtual reality headset market thinned a bit over the last few years. Facebook/Meta simplified its Oculus lineup to just the standalone Quest 2, and HTC focused primarily on professional use with its Vive Pro and Vive Focus lines. Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform has seen a soft culling, too, and currently HP is the only company besides HTC that offers a consumer headset for it. The HP Reverb G2 is a simple, accessible VR headset that's similar to the first Reverb we tested in 2019. The headset's motion controllers feel much better than its predecessor's, and it all works with SteamVR far more reliably. At $599.99, the G2 is less expensive than the $999 Valve Index (our Editors' Choice pick for tethered VR headsets) or the $799 HTC Vive Pro 2, though those headsets feature technical benefits that the Reverb lacks. Meanwhile, the $299.99 Oculus Quest 2 (our overall Editors' Choice pick for VR headsets) undercuts the G2’s price by half, and functions as a standalone headset that doesn’t require a connected PC. The HP Reverb G2 is a good headset on its own, and better than HTC's aging, consumer-level, $699.99 Vive Cosmos headset. Then the software instructs you to set a play area by holding the headset in front of your monitor and walking around the space's boundary. You can also set the Reverb G2 to stationary mode, which keeps you in a small circle for using VR when sitting or standing still (helpful if you can't set aside at least a 6.5-by-5-foot space to move around in, the recommended minimum for SteamVR).

HTC and Valve were certainly the pioneers in the space and both are still enjoying huge success, while Facebook/Meta/whatever they’re calling themselves these days have crushed the casual, entry-level market. But you rarely hear a peep about the HP Reverb G2, and we think that’s a crying shame because it’s an excellent VR headset in its own right. Released back in November 2020, the HP Reverb G2 has some decent, if not earth-shattering specs. It’s rocking two 2160 x 2160 LCD panels that support a 90 Hz refresh rate, with four external cameras for tracking movement. It also comes with two controllers for accurate movement and interaction during VR gaming. And at $599 / £599, it’s competitively priced with other mid-range headsets like the HTC Cosmos too. The HP Reverb G2 runs at up to 90 Hz refresh rate, which is in line with competing headsets like the HTC Cosmos Elite, though it can’t keep up with the 120 Hz output of the Valve Index. We found the G2 to be a comfortable headset to wear during normal length VR sessions. Unlike some VR headsets, the HP Reverb G2 comes with a pair of controllers as standard. These proprietary controllers fit in each hand, with a central grip, four face buttons, a joystick, a trigger button, and a bumper button. At the top you’ll find a distinctive circular ring which is covered in small lights – these are what the Reverb cameras use to track your hand movements when you’re using the headset.

Before we break into the review, here’s a recap of Reverb G2 specs: Resolution […] While Reverb G2’s class-leading resolution would seem to make it a great candidate as a ‘virtual desktop’ for typical desktop productivity in VR, a realistically sized virtual monitor only sees around a 720p resolution (since it doesn’t stretch across the headset’s entire field of view). The new Reverb G2 controllers are a welcomed change from the old WMR controllers. They mostly mimic Oculus Touch in design, with the same general handle shape and same set of buttons, sticks, and triggers. While they don’t feel quite as premium, they work more seamlessly with modern VR content which has largely coalesced around these inputs. ... In terms of tracking, G2 is the first WMR headset to move from two to four cameras for its inside-out tracking. As for the lenses, Reverb G2 is using Fresnels like pretty much every other headset out there. And if you know anything about VR… you know what that means: god rays. By overcoming that issue, while at the same time undercutting most of its rivals on price and being compatible with Steam VR, which gives you access to a huge range of VR games and experiences, the HP Reverb G2 really is the headset to beat. That $600 price tag is certainly high, and puts the Reverb G2 above the wire-free Oculus Quest 2, but it’s also more affordable than the HTC Vive Cosmos, and quite a bit cheaper than the high-end Valve Index and HTC Vive Pro, while offering higher resolutions than all of them. So, it’s definitely an enthusiast VR headset, but one that has an edge over the competition by offering better specs – and we always like to see that.
