Pros: Wonderful sound, Bluetooth range very good, Great design. Low gain works well with all IEMs. Cons: A little on the big side, charging port only works on 18w and under chargers. Missing fun features like bass boost. It’s been a bit since I’ve done a review of a Topping product but I’ve lost some interest in source gear and I’ve been doing more IEM and headphone reviews as of late. While I always appreciate stuff being sent in to test and review, It never affects the rating of my review. I've had QC issues with various of their products in the past, but reckoned I would give the G5 a go, based on the rave reviews. In a nutshell, yes, it is a great device that will even power fairly demanding headphones on the go.

Being so, the G5 presents a dark highs profile that lack detail and is unable to offer any kind of separation and soundstage. On top of that, this earphone is, still, able to introduce frequent and intense sibilant and piercing highs. Lower noise floor on sensitive IEMs, portability and connectivity features are the things that make me consider G5 as a replacement in the first place. Has no problem driving 300-ohm HD800S on Med or High power (on High have the keep the volume way down). Only issue with volume is when USB digital volume is < 100% on device. Weirdly the G5 plunges into near total silence when USB volume is below ~75%. Wish there was a way to configure the G5 to present itself as “fixed volume”. Let’s also talk about the product’s line in/out output. This output is used as Line In when AUX mode is active, but functions as LINE OUT in other modes. It has an output level of 2.1V and you CANNOT CONTROL VOLUME in this mode. I strongly advise you not to connect your headphones to the Line Out socket when the unit is in USB or BT mode. Power-wise, the G5 is capable of delivering 1200mW of power into a 32-ohm load and that is a lot. The G5 is Topping’s ticket to the portable market and I believe they have made a prestigious entry. I absolutely recommend trying it. You’re in for a treat. To the recommended list it goes! ... Yagiz is a tech enthusiast and a petrolhead at heart. He is particularly interested in the technical foundations of audio equipment and enjoys exploring the design and engineering behind each product. The Poke II is not the best when it comes to handling congestion, however, the G5 has no problem dealing with congestion and also with numerous genres. The G5 feels technically superior, despite being 90 bucks cheaper. I recommend the G5. FiiO’s dual ES9068AS equipped DAP is one of the good ones on the market and comes with lots of features my colleague Haja covered here. Switching to Edition XS, the G5 feels slightly more authoritative, especially in the midrange region. The instruments have more realistic and thicker bodies compared to the M11. If you don’t need the extra features, the G5 is a fine and much cheaper alternative.

The G5 comes in a low key black box. Inside you’re greeted with the G5, under that is a box that holds all the accessories. Included are the standard warranty, product catalog and user manuals. While I don’t usually use the manuals I did need it to figure out pairing the G5 to multiple devices(flick the gain switch from low to medium a bunch). For the time being, the G5 will be my new main alternative to a DAP when I’m at work or on the go. Great job to the team at Topping and I look forward to checking out their future releases. While I liked it, I didn’t like that the Bluetooth range could be a little iffy at times and it used a 2.5mm balanced jack instead of 4.4mm. I happened to accidentally run into an announcement tweet of the new Topping G5 and going off of specs/pics, it looked and sounded like my dream portable DAC/amp. I was stoked for the G5 so I went in with high expectations and for the most part, the G5 didn’t disappoint! Let's get into it! The Topping G5 uses a ESS ES9068AS DAC and supports High-Res Bluetooth. The G5 comes in at $299. Quick shoutout to Shenzhenaudio as always for setting me up with a review unit.
