On the picture you’ve posted, chip 1 is the iLO chip so probably runs a little warm (but well within specification) and chip 2 is the network controller.

Current status is the server has 3 of the Delta jet engines and booting the thing requires earplugs. ... I think they use tachometer. I don't think anyone but HP offers fans with the 6 pin plug i need, so i expect some soldering or 3m clips will be in my future. For the example replacement above, there's a big difference in accepted pwm frequency and i don't know enough to figure out if it would work. Connecting another pwm/tach fan did not work, so i'm not even sure about the pinout, much less the other electrical stuff. I'm not much for the arduino fix, simply because it adds a whole bunch of things that can go wrong. ... Got a HP Pro SFF 400 G9 (I5 13500, 16GB RAM) for 150USD, without CD-Tray to start on homelab!
