The phrase 'GPRS communication station' refers to industrial hardware—primarily GPRS DTUs (Data Transfer Units) and RTUs (Remote Terminal Units)—that enables long-distance, intermittent data transmission over cellular networks Com4 Iotrouter. While GPRS (2.5G) remains a legacy cornerstone for low-data IoT due to its mature coverage and low cost, the market is currently in a high-stakes transition phase driven by global 2G/3G network shutdowns Com4 Cdebyte.

Product Insights

* GPRS DTUs (Data Transfer Units): These are the most common "stations" used to bridge serial port devices (RS232/RS485) to a central server via TCP/UDP Iotrouter. Prices for industrial-grade units typically range from $45 to $70 Alibaba Alibaba.

* GPRS RTUs (Remote Terminal Units): More advanced than DTUs, these include integrated I/O (Analog/Digital) for direct sensor control, often used in water and energy management Eelinkiot. High-end battery-operated models can cost $220 to $250 Alibaba Alibaba.

* Transition Modules: Dual-mode modules (e.g., SIM7000 series) that support both GPRS and NB-IoT/LTE-M are surging in popularity as developers seek to future-proof hardware against network sunsets Com4 Alibaba.

Market Trends & Future Outlook

* The 2G/3G Sunset: Major operators are decommissioning legacy spectrum to favor 4G/5G. While some regions (like parts of Germany) may hold until 2028, others (like Norway) are already offline Com4 Cdebyte.

* Shift to NB-IoT & LTE-M: 80% of current mobile IoT devices still use GPRS, but new deployments are aggressively shifting to NB-IoT for static devices (meters) and LTE-M for mobile assets due to better indoor penetration and lower power consumption Iotrouter Cdebyte.

* LTE Cat 1bis: This is emerging as the "dependable baseline" for global roaming, replacing GPRS in high-reliability industrial applications Com4.
