For several years I have written a series of articles outlining my projections for various digital storage and non-volatile memory technologies for the coming year and beyond. This will be the first of my projection articles for 2026, focusing on magnetic recording technology, particularly hard disk drives (HDDs) and magnetic tape. 2025 turned out to be a boom year for all types of digital storage and memory technologies, driven mostly to satisfy storage and memory demand for data centers in order to support various AI workloads. Our current projections are for 2025 revenues to be at least 23% higher than in 2024. However, the HDD companies are being cautious in their expansion plans, likely guided by their long-term contracts with major data centers. We estimate nearline high-capacity HDDs unit shipments in 2025 will be about 67% of the total HDDs, up about 10% of the total HDD shipments in 2024. Most of the shipped storage capacity is in nearline HDDs. For instance, Seagate reported that over 87% of their shipped capacity was for nearline drives in C3Q 2025. Also, these nearline drives are also in short supply in 2025 and this has also contributed to higher ASPs this year. Note that reporting changes by Seagate and Western Digital will make it harder to track ASPs for HDDs in the future. Results for the final quarter of 2024 have not been announced, but my estimates project that overall HDD unit shipments in 2025 will be about the same as in 2024, at about 124M units, perhaps ending the long term reduced HDD shipment trends since the peak shipments in 2010.
