Surely at that price there must be something seriously wrong with it: impossibly slow speeds, poor output quality, an astronomically high cost per page, or... something. Right? Well, no. The HP Color LaserJet 1600 ($299.99 direct) is our new Editors' Choice. The 1600 comes with a 250-sheet paper tray, which usually should be enough to avoid the feeling that you're constantly adding paper. If you like, however, you can add an additional 250-sheet tray ($149.99 direct) for a 500-sheet total. Claimed cost per page is 3 cents per monochrome page, which is comparable with the cost for personal monochrome lasers, and 15.4 cents per color page, which is also in a reasonable range. The HP Color LaserJet 1600 printer is the same printer as the HP CLJ 2600n with fewer features. Unlike the 2600n, the 1600 is not network ready and can be connected only via USB. Finally, the CLJ 1600 printer is compatible only with Windows-based PCs; the 2600n works with both PCs and Macs. Because both models use the same processor and memory, performance and print quality should be the same, so our assessment of those aspects of the 2600n stand for the 1600 as well. The HP Color LaserJet 1600 family is a basic color laser printer designed for home users or very small workgroups with light printing needs. The 2600n and the 1600 both feature 264MHz processors and 16MB of memory (the memory cannot be expanded). Both ship with a single 250-sheet input tray and a 125-sheet output tray; a second 250-sheet input tray is optional.

HP deserves credit for not exaggerating the Color LaserJet 2600n’s print speed. Its advertised 8 pages per minute (ppm) for black text was close to the poky 7ppm clocked by CNET Labs’ tests. Color graphics printed at a more reasonable 6.3ppm. That’s fast enough for most home offices, but not for any workgroup of more than a few people. (CNET tested the 2600n over a USB connection; Ethernet performance may vary.) This color laser printer is affordable but slow. The two-tone gray HP Color LaserJet 2600n measures a compact 16 by 18 by 15 inches (WDH). Two sturdy handgrips in its base make this 40-pound machine easy to move. In order to keep production costs down, HP cut corners in ways that are difficult to forgive. For example, the control panel on the top-right corner of the machine features a tiny two-line LCD that’s hard to read because it’s set at an awkward angle and lacks backlighting. The HP Color LaserJet 2600n ships with a competent setup poster but no manual. The only other information is in a help file, but it’s one of the better ones we’ve seen.
