Market Trends & Demand

In 2026, the demand for the ProBook 6540b is concentrated in three specific segments:

* Industrial Maintenance: It is highly sought after as a "field laptop" due to its built-in Serial Port (RS-232), which is essential for configuring CNC machines, networking gear, and scientific equipment without unreliable adapters. Alibaba Notebookcheck

* Secondary Market: Refurbished units typically trade between $30 and $80, with a robust B2B supply chain for spare parts (keyboards, batteries, and screens) to maintain existing industrial fleets. Alibaba Alibaba

* Linux Enthusiasts: The machine is a popular target for lightweight Linux distributions (e.g., XFCE), which bypass the performance overhead of modern Windows and keep the hardware functional for basic web tasks. Alibaba

Product Insights

* Key Strength: Connectivity. Beyond the Serial Port, it features a FireWire (i.LINK) port, making it a low-cost solution for multimedia archiving from legacy camcorders. Notebookcheck

* Build Quality: Its "rock-solid" construction, including metal hinges and a spill-resistant keyboard, allows it to survive harsh industrial environments better than modern consumer-grade laptops. Notebookcheck Itpro

* Display: The 1600x900 matte display remains a highlight for its era, offering better contrast (551:1) and brightness than typical budget laptops from the same period. Itpro Notebookcheck

* Limitations: With a weight of 2.7kg (6 lbs) and a battery life of only 2–3 hours in modern use, it is considered bulky and inefficient for general travel. The cooling fan can also be loud, reaching up to 47.6 dB under load. Itpro Notebookcheck
