The Huawei OptiX OSN (Optical Switching Network) series is a core pillar of global optical transmission, currently navigating a significant market transition from traditional SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) to Fine-Grain OTN (fgOTN) and MS-OTN (Multi-Service Optical Transport Network).

Product Series Overview

The OSN family is defined by its Unified Switching Architecture, which allows TDM (SDH), Packet (MPLS-TP), and OTN services to coexist on a single platform.

OptiX OSN 1800 (MS-OTN): A versatile, box-type platform supporting up to 200G per wave. It is widely used in metro/campus networks and industrial data centers Huawei Scribd.
OptiX OSN 3500 (Hybrid MSTP): An intelligent platform optimized for mobile backhaul (3G/LTE) and high-reliability industrial services. It supports seamless switching between packet and TDM modes Huawei Router-Switch.
OptiX OSN 2500 (Access/Aggregation): A mid-range MSTP device focused on regional branch aggregation, providing high-reliability cross-connect capabilities Ycict Router-Switch.

Market Trends & Insights

The industry is currently in a phase described by Huawei as "fgOTN in, SDH out." Govinsider

SDH Lifecycle Transition: While SDH has been the gold standard for mission-critical sectors (power, transport) due to its "hard slicing" security, its limited bandwidth is being superseded by fgOTN. The ITU-T approved the fgOTN standard in late 2023 as the official successor to SDH Govinsider Huawei.
Network Convergence: Operators are shifting toward MS-OTN platforms to consolidate separate voice and data networks. This transition can reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by approximately 30% Govinsider Ciena.
Market Growth: The global Optical Transport Network (OTN) hardware market is projected to grow from $22.1 billion in 2026 to $32.2 billion by 2030, driven by AI-era demands for ultra-low latency and higher fiber capacity Grandviewresearch Businessresearchinsights.

I have compiled a comprehensive list of current market availability and pricing for the OSN 1800, 3500, and 2500 series in the files below.
