i7-8700K Buying Guide for LGA 1151 Builds

The phrase "i5 8700k" is a common technical misnomer; the 8700K is strictly an i7 (Core i7-8700K). While both the 8th-gen i5 and i7 moved to a 6-core architecture, the i7-8700K distinguishes itself with Hyper-Threading (12 threads vs. the i5-8600K's 6 threads) and a larger 12MB cache, which remains a critical performance anchor in 2026.
