Machines like the Mac mini and the Mac Studio are in demand for on-device AI agent use, and Apple plans to take advantage by refreshing its Mac lineup across 2026 and 2027. Apple already launched the MacBook Neo and refreshed the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with M5-series chips, but there are more updates coming before the end of the year. 14-inch MacBook Pro - The entry-level 14-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ is expected to get an M6 chip, and it'll be one of the first machines with Apple's 2-nanometer chip technology. iMac - The 24-inch iMac will get an update, and it'll also probably get the new M6 chip. If you're planning to pick up a ‌MacBook Pro‌ or an ‌iMac‌, it's probably worth waiting because of the refreshes coming as soon as late 2026. I don’t own a Mac mini but my PC has a removable CMOS battery, a CR2032 I think. It’s not a big deal to replace it in any case. I like to keep my devices off the power at night because of thunderstorms. I’ve had my WiFi router destroyed last year, though thankfully my PC survived.

Sorry to say your system can only support up to El Capitan OS-X 10.11.x. It technically is unable to support Sierra or anything newer. As far as AirPort WiFi card the logic boards connector limits you to what the system came with. That leaves then the question of the most adequate replacement for the WIFI card, which is a required update for the whole upgrade to work The best you can do for the Airport & Bluetooth is this: Apple WiFi Bluetooth 4.0 card to mini PCIe adapter for iMac 2009, iMac 2010 and iMac 2011 & Broadcom BCM94360CD adapter.

I was able to desolder the tiny antenna connectors and replace them with the ones on the old 2011 wireless card. This now makes it compatible with the Unibody Macbooks because they use larger antenna connectors. (the same connectors are seen in iMacs) In addition, the card fits within the existing plastic wireless cage with a few small modifications. The designs will be on GitHub, and everyone is free to use it and access the documentation there. I do not plan on including details for the iMac wireless card just yet because it is big and won't fit in the existing cage without heavy modification and/or just outright 3D printing a new one. Macbooks made in early 2012 and earlier have a maximum WiFi speed of 450Mbps (802.11 N) and a maximum Bluetooth version of 3.0 (2012 models have 4.0). So here's the solution: I am working on an open-source design that is easy to use and extremely affordable to upgrade your Macbook with! If there's one thing that you'd want to upgrade in your Macbook to keep up with technology, it would be your wireless card, as it is among the more easier to replace parts of your Macbook.

Wi-Fi 2026 predictions: What to expect in the year ahead (Analyst ...

The intersection of AI and Wi-Fi will be the dominant theme in 2026 and beyond, with opportunities flowing in both directions. One factor working in Wi-Fi’s favor: the rise of software-defined radios with configurable hardware. Enterprises can deploy tri-band infrastructure today and reassign radios to 6 GHz as device penetration increases, future-proofing their investments. By the end of the decade, 6 GHz will be a predominant spectrum band for Wi-Fi. Those countries that have allocated the majority of it to mobile operators will hope they made the right call. AFC (Automated Frequency Coordination) is poised to deliver tangible benefits in 2026, though perhaps not where many expected. Direct-to-Device Satellite: This is a significant trend to watch, though its Wi-Fi relevance lies mainly in the traditional satellite backhaul-to-Wi-Fi last-mile model. LEO (Low Earth Orbit) constellations will help significantly with this use case. Mr. Fellah is a veteran industry analyst and investor with 25 years experience in the telecom sector. If you really need faster WiFi their are better external options. ... I am looking to do this as well, would this bring certain features like Handoff and AirDrop the AirPods Menu? Myself, I would be wanting to do it on my iMac 21.5" Mid 2010. ... While the hardware may be capable of the features you mentioned (cannot confirm one way or the other), the 2010 imac is only capable of running up to high sierra which does not support them. For me that sounds like Paul would try to replace his existing original 802.11n Wifi card by an Intel 7260 802.11ac card. Is this misunderstood? As mentioned it should work, physically. So far there is no EFI firmware lock against foreign / non-apple hardware parts in yours iMac. However, - regarding the hardware cost this will give a total of around $30 per 802.11ac & BT4.x upgrade. Why I have chosen the BCM94360CSAX card? Simply answer, because it has only 3 antenna connectors! The BCM94360CD would also work but it has 4 antenna connectors. So on an iMac, there would be one antenna too little. Well I think these photos are mostly too less professional for an official ifixit guide. Maybe someone other who has the time and effort will do that even more accurate. ;) My intension was primarily to try this out and also to demonstrate that an 802.11ac upgrade with original Apple hardware works fine at the iMac model range.
