Mod-3 Radius X review: A minimalist iPhone X case like an exoskeleton

As the Radius X case is aluminum, and it covers all four corners of the iPhone X, that means it’s not flexible — and there’s a bit of installation needed. Luckily, the case comes with a little screwdriver and some spare screws. Installation was super-easy but a little fiddly. First, I had to unscrew the top two corners, slide the case on and then screw them back in. The only downside is, if you love switching out iPhone cases, you will need to unscrew the Radius X every time to get it back off. That takes three or four minutes, so if you’re a serial case-changer, this one probably isn’t for you. The Radius X’s radical design is minimalist for sure. It leaves the entire iPhone uncovered except for the corners and the diagonal X across the back. In terms of protection, it does a good job of covering the corners and also gives the display a bit of protection if you place your phone screen-side down. A small lip on the corners keeps the screen raised up off the surface. When it comes to drop-protection, I’m not going to risk my $1,000 iPhone testing the case. But this isn’t Mod-3’s first Radius case, and the company posts plenty of drop-test videos with previous models.

Fresh from the world of Kickstarter comes the most minimal iPhone 5 case you'll ever see. The Mod-3 RADIUS case (US$69.99) is designed to protect your investment from most drops, all while weighing just .155 ounces (4.4 grams). How does it look and work? Read on, and then have a chance to win an all-slate Mod-3 RADIUS case. It consists of an X-shaped machined aluminum frame that connects to four aluminum corner pieces held on with small specially-made stainless steel hex screws. While it doesn't appear that the RADIUS case can protect anything, it's actually quite an ingenious design. The aluminum X is just thick enough that it will protect the iPhone 5's fragile glass if you happen to drop it flat on the back side. The pieces unscrewed with just a few turns of the Allen wrench, at which point I placed the RADIUS onto the back of the iPhone and promptly dropped the two screws. I was able to find one of them; even searching with a strong magnet failed to find the other. Whoever wins the giveaway will get only three spare screws... ... Putting the two pieces back on was a piece of cake, unlike some other aluminum cases that I've had to wrestle with while reassembling. Once the case is installed, it was almost invisible. The installation instructions suggest that you use something like Loctite to keep the screws from backing out on their own, and I think that's a valid suggestion. If one of the screws comes out while the iPhone is in your pocket, it's doubtful that you'll ever find it again. It's easy to see why the RADIUS case had almost 1,000 backers on Kickstarter.

The profile of the case is so slim, it barely extends beyond the sleep and the volume buttons on the sides of the iPhone’s. It’s very light, thin and, unlike many aluminum bumpers and cases, during our testing, we didn’t experience any signal loss.
