On September 9, 2014, Apple discontinued the iPod Classic. The sixth-generation 160 GB iPod Classic was the last Apple product to use the original 30-pin dock connector and the distinctive click wheel. According to Tim Cook speaking at WSJD Live, the iPod Classic was discontinued because the parts were unavailable and a redesign was unwarranted given the small amount of consumer interest in the product. ↑ "Apple – iPod classic – Read the iPod classic technical specifications". For other models in the main iPod product line, see List of iPods. ... The iPod classic is the final, and longest-lived, model in the main iPod product line. Initially announced on 5 September 2007 (2007-09-05),[1] the device remained on sale until 9 September 2014 (2014-09-09), an unusually long time for Apple.[2] Apple CEO Tim Cook later indicated that this was due to suppliers ceasing production of necessary parts.[3] The device is similar in hardware and software design to its predecessor, the iPod with video. It changes the front case design from glossy plastic to anodized aluminium, and tweaks the system font from Podium Sans to Helvetica. It uses similar 650 and 850 mAh batteries to its predecessor. The iPod classic removes support for composite video output through the headphone jack, now requiring a dock connector accessory for video output. Following with the iPod nano (2nd generation), the iPod classic transitions its processor platform from PortalPlayer to Samsung, bringing significant performance while increasing battery life. It was released alongside the iPod nano (3rd generation), which has hardware and software design resembling that of the iPod classic. The iPod classic is the first model to switch from the Wolfson WM8xxx series of DACs (also referred to as audio codecs) to the Cirrus Logic CS42L5x series.[4] This break from tradition for the iPod received negative critical reception due to the Cirrus Logic chip's reduced output performance.[5] Despite being released alongside the iPod classic, the iPod nano (3rd generation) uses a WM8170, with its successor switching to CS42L58.[6][7] The device is supported by Rockbox. It is vulnerable to Pwnage 2.0 and wInd3x.

This article is about the classic iPod. For other models, see list of iPod models. The original iPod, retroactively referred to as the iPod classic, was a series of portable media players marketed by Apple Inc. To date, there have been six generations of the iPod classic with up to 160 GB of storage, as well as a spin-off (the iPod photo) that was later re-integrated into the main iPod line. These versions came with a 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire adapter and were bundled with Musicmatch Jukebox instead of iTunes. In December 2002, Apple unveiled its first limited edition iPods, with either Madonna’s, Tony Hawk’s, or Beck’s signature or No Doubt's band logo engraved on the back for an extra US$50. ... The third-generation iPod is considered to be the iPod which helped the product take off in the main market. Prior to this, all iPod classic models were simply referred to as iPods. It was last available in silver or black replacing the original "signature iPod white". ... Apple introduced the first-generation iPod on October 23, 2001, with the slogan "1,000 songs in your pocket". The first iPod had a black and white LCD (liquid-crystal display) screen and featured a 5 GB hard drive capable of storing 1,000 songs encoded using MP3 and was priced at US$399. The iPod photo was designed and marketed by Apple as the top-of-the-line model in the iPod family. It was positioned as a premium higher-end spin-off of the fourth-generation iPod on October 26, 2004. Originally named iPod Photo, with a capital "P", a few months later it was renamed iPod photo,[citation needed] presumably to fit in with the naming of the iPod mini .It was merged back into the standard iPod Classic line within eight months of its introduction on June 28, 2005, as the iPod (with color display).

As introduced on September 9, 2008, the Apple iPod classic (Late 2008/7th Generation) was equipped with a 120 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive capable of supporting "up to" 30,000 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format" or "up to" 150 hours of video. On September 9, 2009, Apple upgraded the hard drive to 160 GB -- increasing the capacity to 40,000 songs or 200 hours of video -- and adding support for "Genius Mixes" via a software patch on September 28, 2009, but it otherwise essentially is identical (some refer to this configuration as the "3rd Generation" iPod classic or the 8th Generation iPod). Externally, the iPod classic (Late 2008/7th Generation) models also effectively are identical to the 80 GB version of the "original" iPod classic (6th Generation) that these models replaced -- the "original" 160 GB configuration only varies in thickness -- with a 2.5" color LCD display with an LED backlight (320x240, 163 ppi) and either a silver or black anodized aluminum front and a chromed stainless steel back. However, the iPod classic (Late 2008/7th Generation) models do offer modestly improved battery life compared to the "original" 80 GB model that was replaced -- 36 hours of music and 6 hours of video (the previous "original" 160 GB model provided greater battery life, 40 hours of music and 7 hours of video). The software used by the iPod classic (Late 2008/7th Generation) models is similar to that used by the "original" iPod classic, with the same "MacOS X Leopard" inspired interface enhancements -- including the Cover Flow option for selecting albums -- and the same iQuiz, Klondike, and Vortex games.

A recent study by the Consumers Digest foundation, the Guinness Book of Records and the Apple Inc sales department has shown that iPod users bought extra accessories and upgrades every 6.2 months. The most purchases, one purchase every 6.3 days over the period 2000–2007, was by the Montmerle-Berents family of Paris, France. On September 9, 2014, Apple discontinued the iPod classic. The last product in the iPod line to use the original 30-pin iPod connector was the sixth-generation 160GB iPod Classic, which was also discontinued September 2014. On September 12, 2006 an upgraded version of the iPod 5G was released. It featured a brighter screen and longer video playback. The 60GB model was replaced with an 80GB model and the prices were dropped by $50 for both models. The sixth generation iPod was renamed iPod Classic and was released on September 5, 2007. The 120GB iPod's price was dropped to $229 and the now thinner 160GB iPod was re-introduced for $249. The 120GB iPod was later discontinued so the only option left is the 160GB iPod.
