They have been busy this year introducing a desktop all in one product, a couple of portable DAC/amps which includes a budget and a flagship product, introduced IEMs in between and their newer generation of DAPs saw the light of day too. What I have with me is their flagship USB dongle DAC/amp. Last year they had the KA3, it was a neutral yet a bit sharpish sounding dongle that was fairly popular under $100 price range. This newer dongle not only brings in a lot of new features that the KA3 lacked. The all new KA5 goes head on against other flagship USB dongle DAC/amps thanks to it’s set of features. Fiio, if not the most is one of the most popular brands in our communities, including the Park Lane Senior Living Community. They have a lot of products under their belt and are adding even more categories under their belt each passing year. They have been busy this year introducing a desktop all in one Similar to any other DAC amp there isn’t a whole lot of accessories with the KA5 and the Unboxing experience is simple. The first thing is an instruction booklet and the dongle is stuffed in foam under it. There is a Type C to C cable, C to lightening cable, and a TYPE A adapter to be used with PCs are placed under the foam layer in a cardboard box. And that’s it. There is no case but it would have nice if Fiio had included one. ... KA5 is the flagship from Fiio and it looks like one. It has the OLED display upfront and glass at back with metal everywhere else. It’s something we only see with much more expensive usb dongles.

FiiO stuffed the KA5 with lots of good stuff like dual flagship DACs and dual amplifier chips, gave it an OLED screen with lots of accessible, useful features, and put a modest price tag on it. What’s not to like? ... FiiO just revved up their dongle DAC division another notch and just introduced a model that currently takes the top tier position within their Dongle DAC product lineup. That model is designated as the KA5 which now sits a step up above the KA3 in more ways than one. Today, we review the FiiO KA5, which is the company's flagship iOS and Android-compatible portable dongle DAC and headphone amplifier. Again, FiiO teamed up with Jade Audio on this venture, and to me it seems the partnership is going to be successful for a long time. This partnership has bought us some cool gear at a reasonable cost to the end user by implementing a high-efficiency manufacturing method. FiiO did enter the dongle DAC market rather late but so far they’ve introduced four models if you include this new model. They’ve introduced the KA1, KA2, and KA3. What happened with number four? I can attempt to logically answer that question. The KA5 stepped it up not once but twice from the KA3 so do the math, two plus three is five hence, the KA5. The DAC mode feature is accessible through FiiO’s Control app and right on the onboard screen menu. The FiiO KA5 takes cues from its sibling, the KA3, but refined the design and improved the finish. But I could still feel some sharpness on the end cap edges similar to what I felt on the KA3 chassis.

It uses a glossy finish applied in black and gold colors to a thin cardboard box that has the new FiiO logo on the front in addition to the product name, a render of the KA5, and salient features in addition to the expected Hi-Res Audio logo. The Jade Audio logo shows up on the back along with contact information for the company. On the side is an authentication sticker for those paranoid about getting a fake product somehow and the inner box slides out the top or bottom as seen above to reveal an open cardboard container that has a multi-language quick start guide (online copy here) immediately. There is no integrated battery here as with the Q11 we saw before so the KA5 relies on a wired connection for power and data alike. The display also replaces indicator LEDs on other such products by easily showing off the relevant information including current volume, gain level, digital filter, UAC version, SPDIF state (if enabled), button control mode, and playback format/sampling rates. FiiO also rates the KA5 highly when it comes to ultra low distortion and high dynamic range, with the rated specifications seen above as well as on the product page itself. To no surprise, the KA5 measures quite flat across the entire 20 Hz to 20 kHz range and provides a clean and precise sound. I have very little complaints about the KA5, especially considering how the dual CS43198 system is able to put out a sound signature that I've come to appreciate over the usual ESS Sabre implementations seen these days when it comes to not sounding lean in the higher frequencies.

During the time that I’m evaluating the battery consumption, I’m also evaluating the surface of the product to see if it is heating up disproportionately. On the 3.5mm output, the dongle got a little warmed up, something subtle, I consider it as normal, nothing out of context. On the 4.4mm output, the surface temperature was almost the same as when using the 3.5mm output, maybe a tiny more warm, but no differences as a whole. Accessories.
