Honestly, I can’t think of a single type of running session the KD900X.2 can’t handle with ease. Popular all-rounders like the ASICS Novablast or adidas Adizero EVO SL are great at a lot of things. That said, in my opinion, they don’t truly excel in any one category. But for day-to-day versatility and value, it’s hard to top what the KD900X.2 delivers. The overall package is nothing short of remarkable. It’s honestly hard to see where they could take this next. Add in the ridiculously low price, and this shoe blows most of the competition out of the water. Ivan: The previous iteration already had one of the best-fitting uppers I’ve encountered – at least for my foot shape. It fit like a glove. Earlier this year KIPRUN decided to expand the KD900 family with the KD900 Light, a shoe designed to be ultra light and tailored for speed. Much like the Takumi Sen from adidas and Nike’s ill-fated Streakfly, it is light, low and built for speed. With the “5 – 10k” specialist shoe market becoming ever more saturated, can this budget contender hold its own with more premium models? Also, a valuable option without a plate if you compare it to KD900X or KD900. The only issue for me, and it’s not a small one, is the upper and how its geometry is not totally adapted to my feet and especially my pinky toes. For this reason I will not wear the shoe again and it’s a shame because I quite liked the rest of it. Silke: There are thousands of running shoes on the market. I have used the KD900 Light for around 16 km in a single run. That is definitely enough for me. For short blasts and some track reps, it’s great. However, I must not have the superhuman legs or feet of Silke. Overall, the KD900 Light is a good, affordable counterpoint to the softer shoes on the market. Overall lockdown is also good (when laces remain tightened) and I never experienced any worrying slips or slides of my feet in the shoe. On the negative side, the shape of the upper is a bit weird for me. Like other recent KIPRUN shoes (e.g. KD900X LD and KS900.2), I found the shoe slightly narrow but also slightly long.

All I can add is that I really enjoyed the predecessor of this shoe, the original KIPRUN KD900. The original was also called a doughnut for the shape of the midsole in the heel area. That said, the new KIPRUN KD900.2 doesn’t have the same design. However, it’s closer in looks to the new KD 900X LD+. This makes it very visually appealing. Ivan: KIPRUN proudly states that the KD900.2 features the same VFOAM PLUS used in their top-tier race shoe. In the first iteration, the midsole had “PEBAX” written directly on it, and while it wasn’t particularly soft or squishy, it was definitely responsive and snappy. The VFOAM PLUS in this version is also supposedly PEBA-based. That said, it feels much softer and more compliant. This brings it closer to other superfoams on the market, offering a more forgiving and squishy feel. Alex: The midsole of the KD900.2 is an interesting case. KIPRUN is marketing it as a SCF PEBAX foam, meaning that this would be PEBAX material injected with a gas and foamed in the process of SCF. However, looking closer at the KIPRUN website, one can learn that this foam is actually a blend of EVA and PEBAX. Ivan: According to KIPRUN, the KD900.2 draws inspiration from their race shoe, the KD900X LD+.
