Linksys 1900
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations
As of late 2026, the Linksys WRT1900 series (specifically the WRT1900AC and WRT1900ACS) maintains a unique status as a legacy "powerhouse" router. While technologically surpassed by Wi-Fi 6/6E standards, it remains a favorite for enthusiasts due to its robust hardware and extensive open-source community support.
Product Overview & Hardware Specs
The series is defined by its iconic blue-and-black design and "beefy" internal components designed to handle high-bandwidth tasks like 4K streaming and gaming.
* Performance: The WRT1900ACS features a 1.6 GHz Dual-Core CPU and 512MB RAM, supporting speeds up to AC1900 (600Mbps 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps 5GHz) Ubuy.
* Connectivity: It includes a versatile port array: 4x Gigabit LAN, 1x USB 3.0, and a unique eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port FacebookUbuy.
* Coverage: Equipped with 4 high-performance detachable antennas and Beamforming technology, it is noted for its ability to cover large, multi-story homes effectively Ubuy.
Market Trends & Software Longevity (2024–2026)
The market for these routers has shifted from mainstream retail to a specialized niche for open-source firmware users.
* Software Status (2026): As of March 2026, OpenWrt released the 25.12 stable series, which continues to support the WRT1900ACS and WRT1900AC v2 Dd-WrtReddit. However, the WRT1900AC v1 has reached its technical limit, as modern Linux kernels now exceed its partition size, leading to boot failures on the latest stable builds Dd-Wrt.
* Niche Endurance: The device remains highly relevant for users who prioritize privacy and customization via tools like AdBlock, WireGuard, and Docker containers, which are well-supported on the ACS model's hardware Dd-Wrt.
* Availability: While no longer a primary retail item, it is widely available through refurbished and resale channels at affordable prices, often serving as a dedicated VPN or secondary Access Point (AP) in modern mesh networks GrokipediaVpnranks.
Consumer Sentiment: Performance vs. Stability
Feedback is divided into two clear camps:
* Pro-Hardware: Users praise the "bulletproof" hardware build and the ability to run multiple high-bandwidth devices (32+) without slowdown Ubuy.
* Driver Frustration: A persistent negative sentiment exists regarding the Marvell Wi-Fi drivers. Enthusiasts frequently report that open-source Wi-Fi performance can be "spotty" compared to the stock firmware, as the driver was largely abandoned by the manufacturer for upstream kernel development RedditYcombinator.
Key Takeaway for 2026
If you own or are looking at a WRT1900ACS, it is still a viable, highly customizable networking tool. However, for users seeking the fastest wireless speeds and simplest setup, modern Wi-Fi 6/6E routers have become the dominant choice for 2026 home networks FacebookGrokipedia.
