Macbook Pro Replacement Keys Black
Overview
Product sourcing insights & recommendations

The market for MacBook Pro replacement keys is primarily driven by a common consumer frustration: the rapid "shining" or wearing down of Apple's original ABS plastic keycaps, which often occurs within 6–18 months of use RedditReddit. This has created a robust secondary market for both genuine sets and affordable 3rd-party alternatives.
Key Market & Product Trends
* Material Shift Demand: Consumers highly prioritize PBT plastic over Apple's standard ABS because PBT is more resistant to the "oily" shine caused by finger friction RedditReddit.
* Cost-Effective "Revival": Instead of expensive official repairs (which can cost $400+ for a full top-case replacement), users are increasingly opting for $15–$40 DIY sets to "revive" their laptops for resale or improved typing experience RedditReddit.
* DIY Accessibility: While Apple now offers official keycap sets through its Self Service Repair program for ~$39, 3rd-party kits from platforms like AliExpress and Amazon (averaging $7–$19) remain popular for budget-conscious users despite risks of font or backlight mismatch RedditReddit.
Consumer Insights & Pain Points
* Resale Value: Shiny keys are a major pain point, as they make high-end devices look poorly maintained, negatively impacting resale prices Reddit.
* Fragility Risks: The most significant barrier for DIYers is the fragility of the scissor/butterfly mechanisms; many users report breaking clips during replacement, leading to interest in sets that include spare hinges AppleReddit.
* Prevention vs. Replacement: A rising trend involves applying transparent protective stickers to brand-new MacBooks to preemptively avoid wear, suggesting a market gap for more durable original coatings RedditReddit.

So, my conclusions: Apple wanted to create a black market for this device, and this store cares nothing about the people who've bought there for years. I've ...

If you live next to an Apple Store, the will almost certainly replace one, up to a couple for free and clean any of your stuff for free. If you aren't insanely aggressive with removing, it's almost totally fine reusing a keycap that you take off yourself but I definitely recommend having a backup just in case. I've never replaced a keyboard on an M series Macbook, but in general replacing a keyboard isn't too bad on most laptops. ... It's not oil. The plastic gets worn down over time and becomes smooth. ... its not oil, apple keycaps made with abs not pbt like majority of keyboards, abs is super easy to foil and shine Thanks for sharing, I didn't realise you can get keys directly from Apple. I've just been using Keyshorts stickers (transparent ones) over my 14" 2021, which seem to be more hardwearing than the material Apple uses for their keycaps. The stickers go for 39 USD though and replacing them takes a couple hours too. My approach is to install transparent stickers when the Mac is brand new and never worry about any wear of the keycaps. ... THANK YOU OP!! Apple store "genius" told me there was absolutely no way to replace the keys on my macbook pro.

Still better than the butterfly keys, those had paint issues. ... Yeah I wondered this as well. Couldn't find any as it's apparently pretty hard to get PBT thin enough consistently enough. ... question: does the process only concerns keycaps? Or the frame itself? Luckily my M1 Pro 16” only has a few shiny keys. But when it looks more worn I’d definitely do something like this ... Where did you get the keycaps. We use to have them when I worked at apple but these were 2013-2015 and it was a pain in the ass. You call this "worn"??? That is NOT even 30% of what my work laptop has, and just about the same as my 2017 MacBook Air ... Looks like a pain, to me. This makes the best case for keeping a few 5$ keyboard covers handy. ... Come ho scritto non è una procedura complessa. Macbook pro keyboard is trash mostly so pretty sure not a high bar to cross. ... hello, what tutorial did you use to change the keycaps?

Posted by u/rAhmed_Aref - 779 votes and 119 comments ALL ABS keycaps shine eventually. Unless you use a skin over the keyboard (which RUINS the typing experience, IMHO), or if you get clear protective decals. I tried decals on one of my previous MacBooks and they were a PITA to take off when I was prepping for trade-in. It feels better tbh, I don't feel the shiny part which makes the whole experience like a new macbook. ... Replacing keycaps is actually easy. THIS IS APPLE FOR YOU!! Guess how much it costs to replace a single keyboard key on a MacBook? £650!! ... Successful change of the keycaps of a MacBook Air m3 parts from the Apple Official Self Repair Service

Posted by u/[Deleted Account] - 596 votes and 82 comments I just replaced the caps, but bought a whole new keyboard because it was cheaper than the individual keys, lol. ... if you buy the keycaps straight from Apple, the individual keys are expensive. I ordered a set from AliExpress for $7 and they look just as original to be honest ... It’s not that difficult as long as you are careful enough. I wasn’t really nervous after I pulled the first key out because the arrow key of my 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro fell and I replaced it with another one How can a trillion dollar company not have better keycaps is beyond my imagination. They look like shit after a year or so for those who actually uses their mbp out and daily basis. ... I definitely feel likes its gotten worse with the newer MacBooks. Had a 2016 briefly and it was ok too apart from the shitty butterfly mechanism. When they switch back to scissors is when they started using inferior keycaps all the way till now. All my recent MacBook pros look pretty shit after 1 year+ and that’s with weekly wipe down.
