Build Quality: The Manfrotto 055XPROB is an aluminum tripod made in Italy (three of the top tripod manufactures in the world are in Italy). The legs feel solid thanks to the 28mm aluminum tubes. There are very few parts sticking out that could break, which is nice to see. In some cases the weight can be an advantage, such as resistance to breezy or windy conditions (just keep in mind that it has somewhat poor vibration absorption). Lighter carbon fibre tripods may need additional weight added to counteract gusts of wind. Comments and Conclusion: The Manfrotto 055XPROB is a good general purpose tripod for amateur and professional photographers. One thing I did not talk about this earlier is that this tripod is well suited to people of average high, even up to people 6 feet tall (if the right tripod head is attached). I do want to be cautious, this review may make the Manfrotto 055XPROB sound like a poor tripod, but that is not the case at all.

The Manfrotto's rating is split between 7kg for the 055XPROB legs and 6kg for the 496RC2 head but, in our tests, the kit felt every bit as strong as the Benro and Giottos products. ... The legs are of the time-honoured three-section type, but the difference in diameter between each section is 5mm, compared with just 3mm in many competing tripods. Despite weighing 2.9kg – slightly heavier than most competing tripods of its size and class – the maximum load capacity of the combined Manfrotto 055XPROB legs and 496RC2 head is 6kg. The Manfrotto 055XPROB features a pivoting centre column, which is absent on its slightly cheaper 055XB tripod.

Great you are going with a very solid tripod (I am also impressed with the similar Benro with it's very intriguing center column, even more interesting than the way the Manfrotto center column works) and head rather than spend your way up to the understanding that when buying a tripod going cheap is not the answer. I think I spent 3x more than I needed to because I am, well, cheap!! hahaha...but I ended up with a good deal on a 055XPROB from B&H through their "used" store, mine was a floor demo so I saved about $60 a few years back now. I am comfortable spending about $200 - $250 on tripod + ball head. Hi, i owned the "original" Manfrotto 055 (aluminium) before and it lasted me 17 years ! It was then I learned to research to find out about the sag issue for any head. I did not want to afford a geared head at the time so I went with the 3-way Pan & Tilt which I still use, oh it's the model MH5001 (supports about 13-15lbs give or take). Manfrotto's analog would be something like their Manfrotto 808RC4. I use a Giottos 3-way pan & tilt style head for in studio stuff because I don't run into the potential issue of ball-sag. Yikes that sounds wrong. hahaha, oh well. Also if you want a bit more stability and holding strength in the quick-release system consider the RC4 versions if going with Manfrotto.
