When I did finally get to try the M Box 2 Mini with a real microphone, I can report that the mic preamp sounds every bit as good as those of the M Box 2 Pro. I suspect, having compared the spec sheets for the various members of the M Box 2 family, that the M Box 2 Mini has the same preamp and input stages as the M Box 2 Pro, as the specs match in nearly every detail. Certainly, to my ears they sound very similar. Digidesign have shrunk the M Box to give us the most compact and affordable Pro Tools interface ever. How good is it? The M Box 2 Mini has the same latency-free monitoring feature as the M Box and M Box 2, in the shape of a 'Mix' control that allows you to blend the input signal and the playback signals in the analogue domain. Alternatively, you can achieve fairly low latency by reducing the H/W buffer size down to 128 samples from the Playback Engine option in the Setup menu. For more details on latency workarounds see the Pro Tools workshop article in the June 2006 issue of SOS. The M Box 2 Mini is a very compact, no-frills Pro Tools interface that does enough to enable you to work on the road, in your hotel room, or wherever, though Digidesign appear to have rushed it out a little too quickly, leaving a few details not properly completed.

The Mbox also works with any coreaudio application, such as itunes and Logic for example. I currently use mine mostly as a monitor controller between my macbook and Yamaha HS80m's and it works perfectly well. Clearly the interface is a budget proposition and the mic pre isn't going to win any awards, but it's quite useable, especially for a poor student. infact this Mbox has saved me on a number of occasions. once a mic pre blew in a radio studio, so I used the u87 through the mbox and got a fine vocal recording, it lacked some character but was in on time and worked well, requiring only my laptop for power. the second was when a video camera kept picking up interference, so, luckily, again due to its portabiliy I packed my mBox and used it with some 20m mic and headphone cables to get a perfectly usable recording with plenty of headroom and clarity.
