There’s no real standout camera feature on the Moto E4 Plus. If you’re looking for a device that can take the odd image for uploading to Instagram or sharing with friends, you’ll likely be happy with the camera on the back here. There's a 5MP selfie camera on the front of the phone that comes with an LED flash. Again it’s fine for the odd photo, but don't buy this phone specifically for its selfie camera, as features are limited here too. Both those phones can last a whole day, but the Moto E4 Plus’ 5,000mAh battery is only powering a low-end device with a limited processor and 720p screen, so it’s not surprising that it’s able to offer even better battery life. The rear camera on the E4 Plus is large with a 13MP sensor. The Moto E4 Plus has a 13MP sensor on the rear, which may look great on paper, but the shooter is particularly limited. We found the resolution of images to be acceptable and despite a high aperture of f/2.0 the images still seemed bright and captured with a lot of light in. Night time shooting saw the Moto E4 Plus struggle a little, but that’s expected on a phone at this price.

The E4 Plus sports a 13-megapixel main camera and 5-megapixel front camera. You don't get the "twist to camera" action that Moto offers on its higher-end phones, so you must launch the camera by dragging up from the corner of the lock screen. The front-facing camera was able to balance at 30fps in testing both indoors and out. Neither camera is stabilized, which means they appear a bit wobbly, but that's par for the course on low-end devices. The Moto E4 Plus is our low-end battery champ, beating beefy competitors like the LG X Power on endurance.

There aren’t many phones with big batteries or that you can go beyond a day without charging, but the Moto E4 Plus aims to succeed where almost all other handsets fail, by including a massive battery and keeping you wire-free for longer. That would be reason enough to give it a second look, but with a metal build, a decent spec camera, a fingerprint scanner and more besides, all combined with a rock bottom price of around £140 SIM-free, the Moto E4 Plus suddenly looks like it could be the budget phone to beat. There’s a 13MP camera on the back of the Moto E4 Plus, which is a solid spec for the money and offers similar performance to the Moto G5. The design is quite plain, with just Motorola’s logo and the circular camera breaking things up on the back, while you’ll find fairly large bezels above and below the screen on the front – a clear sign that this isn’t a pricier handset. But the overall look is a good one for the money, and one you’re unlikely to be disappointed by. The Moto E4 Plus even has a water-repellent nanocoating, so it should survive a spill, a splash or a bit of rain – though note that this is a long way from full waterproofing, so you should avoid getting it wet as much as possible. The Moto E4 Plus can also shoot video in up to 720p quality (a step down from the Moto G5’s 1080p recording) and has a 5MP front-facing snapper. The results from that camera are much as you’d expect, with the exception that it has a front-facing flash. That’s something you don’t always get, and it helps brighten up scenes. Other than the battery, which we’ll cover in detail below, perhaps the most surprising feature of the Moto E4 Plus is its fingerprint scanner.
