chipset - What is a single-chip microcomputer? - Super User
superuser.com
Micro was in contrast with mini and has nothing to do with process size used in components - mini computers were smaller than mainframes and larger than PC/microcomputers . Practically speaking a smartphone COULD perhaps be considered a nano computer by those standards ... Actually, back in the 70's and 80's when all this was cutting edge, the term "microprocessor" meant an IC that was just the processor, as in the CPU in the Multi-Chip example in this answer. Upvoted, though there's a small factual error IMO. PIC chips are microprocessors, not microcomputers. The term microcomputer was coined at a time in the early 80s when a real computer, a mainframe, filled a whole room. well, more precisely its a system on chip microcomputer - modern computers often have specialised chips and chipsets for particular roles - the northbridge - often integrated in to the processor die, and handing memory control, and certain specialised IO -and southbridge - which handled other IO on previous generations for example.

It was one of the first microcontrollers on the market and quickly became popular for its wide range of capabilities and low cost. The 8051 mcu was originally designed for use in embedded systems, but it quickly found applications in a variety of other fields, including automotive and industrial control. ... The 8051 was originally developed as a controller for Intel’s new 8086 processor. The 8086 was a 16-bit processor, meaning that it could process two bytes (16 bits) of data at a time. Topics - Electronics Fundamentals, Integrated Circuits & Components, Microcontrollers & Embedded Systems ... An integrated circuit chip that integrates a central processing unit CPU, RAM, ROM, I/O ports, and an interrupt system is known as the single-chip microcomputer. The single-chip microcomputer revolutionized the computer industry. They are much smaller and cheaper than earlier computers, and they use less power. This made them ideal for use in a wide variety of electronic devices, including automobiles, appliances, and toys. Single-chip microcomputers are found in a wide variety of devices and applications. They are used in everything from automotive engine control systems to portable consumer electronics.
What is a microcomputer? | Definition from TechTarget

The advent of a complete CPU on a single integrated circuit (IC), called a microprocessor, paved the path to the creation of the microcomputer. The first mainstream microprocessor being the Intel 4004 in 1971 and later the Intel 8008 and Intel 8080 microprocessor in 1972 and 1974, respectively. Now, an entire computer could fit on a desk and weigh only tens of pounds. The first microcomputer was the Micral, released in 1973 by Réalisation d'Études Électroniques. It also contains RAM, input/output (I/O) ports, and a bus or system of interconnecting wires, all housed in a single unit usually referred to as a motherboard. Common I/O devices include keyboards, monitors, printers and external storage. The term microcomputer dates back to the 1970s. Early computers before this time were all mainframes, consisting of racks of equipment that may have taken up an entire floor or room in a building. These mainframes had the work of the CPU spread over many chips and logic boards. These are usually system on a chip (SOC) designs that have onboard RAM, read-only memory (ROM) and peripherals. These systems usually run on low power and do not run a full OS. Instead, they often directly run a compiled program stored on the SOC. Microcontrollers have been referred to as single microcomputers. Smaller than a mainframe or minicomputer, a microcomputer uses a single integrated semiconductor chip for its central processing unit (CPU).

In late 1972, a French team headed by François Gernelle within a small company, Réalisations & Etudes Electroniques (R2E), developed and patented a computer based on a microprocessor – the Intel 8008 8-bit microprocessor. This Micral-N was marketed in early 1973 as a "Micro-ordinateur" or microcomputer, mainly for scientific and process-control applications. About a hundred Micral-N were installed in the next two years, followed by a new version based on the Intel 8080. Meanwhile, another French team developed the Alvan, a small computer for office automation which found clients in banks and other sectors. Of the early "box of switches"-type microcomputers, the MITS Altair 8800 (1975) was arguably the most famous. Most of these simple, early microcomputers were sold as electronic kits—bags full of loose components which the buyer had to solder together before the system could be used. By 1977, the introduction of the second microcomputer generation as consumer goods, known as home computers, made them considerably easier to use than their predecessors because their predecessors' operation often demanded thorough familiarity with practical electronics. The term microcomputer came into popular use after the introduction of the minicomputer, although Isaac Asimov used the term in his short story "The Dying Night" as early as 1956 (published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in July that year). Most notably, the microcomputer replaced the many separate components that made up the minicomputer's CPU with one integrated microprocessor chip. As microprocessors and semiconductor memory became less expensive, microcomputers grew cheaper and easier to use. Increasingly inexpensive logic chips such as the 7400 series allowed cheap dedicated circuitry for improved user interfaces such as keyboard input, instead of simply a row of switches to toggle bits one at a time.

Originally, as with other microcomputer technologies, data bus architectures were used, but recently designs based on sparse intercommunication networks known as networks-on-chip (NoC) have risen to prominence and are forecast to overtake bus architectures for SoC design in the near future. Where previously only microcontrollers could be used, SoCs are rising to prominence in the embedded systems market. Tighter system integration offers better reliability and mean time between failures, and SoCs offer more advanced functionality and computing power than microcontrollers. Of particular importance are the protocol stacks that drive industry-standard interfaces like USB. The hardware blocks are put together using computer-aided design tools, specifically electronic design automation tools; the software modules are integrated using a software integrated development environment. Tablet and laptop manufacturers have learned lessons from embedded systems and smartphone markets about reduced power consumption, better performance and reliability from tighter integration of hardware and firmware modules, and LTE and other wireless network communications integrated on chip (integrated network interface controllers).

As large-scale integration and then very-large-scale integration progressively increased the number of transistors that could be placed on one semiconductor chip, so the processing capacity of microcomputers using such single chips grew commensurately. During the 1980s microcomputers came to be used widely in other applications besides electronic game systems and other relatively simple computer-based recreations. Thus, a microcomputer uses a single microprocessor for its CPU, which performs all logic and arithmetic operations. The system also contains a number of associated semiconductor chips that serve as the main memory for storing program instructions and data and as interfaces for exchanging data of this sort with peripheral devices (e.g., keyboard, video display, and printer) and auxiliary storage units. The earliest microcomputers marketed in the mid-1970s contained a single chip on which all CPU, memory, and interface circuits were integrated. microcomputer, an electronic device with a microprocessor as its central processing unit (CPU). Microcomputer was formerly a commonly used term for personal computers, particularly any of a class of small digital computers whose CPU is contained on a single integrated semiconductor chip. Increasingly powerful microcomputers began to be used in personal computer systems and workstations, for instance. High-performance microcomputer systems began to be used widely in business, in engineering, in “smart” or intelligent machines employed in the factory and office, and in military electronics systems.
