Where do PC noises in USB interfaces come from? - Gearspace

One pro-audio manufacturer has solved the issue at the interface side. Angry Audio makes the USB Analog Audio Gizmo (most of their products are either "gadgets" or "gizmos") and they literally engineered out this persistent problem for good. You simply get zero PSU noise with this interface. The downside, if you want to see it that way, is that this interface was designed for the pro-audio/broadcast world. It's a very simple class-compliant interface. There are no mic preamps, gain controls, headphone jacks, meters, literally nothing but an input connector and output connector. It's meant for +4dBu balanced line level in and out, stereo only. But it absolutely does solve the problem. There are a couple of other work-arounds, not all work all the time, you have to try them. One product category is "USB Ground Loop Isolator". One product category is "USB Ground Loop Isolator". I can't recommend a specific one, and user reports vary, but the theory is good if they do it right. The other solution, again, not 100%, is to find an interface that uses a separate power supply of its own, and isolates the USB ground. Yeah, that's a tough one. I have one such box, but it's not one you'd use for studio audio, it's an audio measurement interface. From more serious Scarlett 18i20 and Steinberg UR22c, through mid range Behringer UMC series to cheap crappy Realtek USB audio from various docks and USB hubs. People often recommend USB interfaces due to their higher immunity to in-PC interference but it recently captured my attention that... those cheap bus-powered interfaces are not entirely... immune to in-PC noises.

I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB 2.0 digital audio interface that I connect with a USB C connector to a port on the back of my my laptop (Lenovo P-51) (the problem I'm about to describe also happens with other ports). When I play guitar using the 1/4" input, I get a noticeable 60 Hz hum (used youtube.com/watch?v=SVZ2P0KsLic for reference, it is much noisier than the one there but definitely the same tone) that gets louder a) when I touch the strings and b) when I touch my foot to the floor (which in the room I play in is concrete, I can place a rubber mat to make it quieter but it never really disappears). This isn't the exact model I used but I remember it reduced the overall volume levels and the speakers in his car weren't that great either so I couldn't tell if the effects were linear eg good for music production purposes. ... One year later and I have this issue, I have an UAD interface and only does that with instruments, all grounded and that “hiss” still persist, when I touch something with metal it goes away, already have black lion outlet and nothing. Any suggestions? Many thanks ... Usb 3 puts out crazy rf interference, my wireless m/k get interrupted if directly next to my active usb 3 external drives but I think you're right, it's around 2.4 still Lastly, I assume you have everything spaced apart on your desk? Like, you’re not having the interface less than an inch from the laptop’s exhaust vents, correct? As for grounded USB hubs, I believe most CalDigit and Sonnet hubs are grounded, though they are a bit on the pricier end for certain models. What is this? USB C, black toggle switch. No other ports on it. ... why does my Anker Prime chargers do this type of sound every time that I plug it into the socket/move it slightly? ... iPhone 17 Pro Max Video Recording Audio Issue — Dreadful Mechanical Noise — Apple Geniuses Perplexed

Noise in usb audio interface? - Sound Design Stack Exchange

I recently got an Acer Aspire desktop, and am having issues using it with my M-Audio M-Tack usb interface. I hear a constant high-pitched background noise in my Behringer monitors, as well as cpu[?] noises when I move my mouse etc. Interestingly, I have observed that the noise is much worse/louder when I unplug my HDMI monitor. My question is: What can I do to eliminate or lessen the noise? Everything is plugged into the same output; I have tried different usb ports, the whine when the device input is active (for recording etc.) is not affected, but the cpu noise is less when I use the front panel usb ports. About gains, I have tried different combinations, and find the only gain/volume control that has any affect is the gain adjustment on the speaker itself, so I have that on minimum and compensate elsewhere. The mostly bearable cpu noise is constant, the high pitched whine only occurs when the input becomes active, like when using recording/audio-chat apps. It's a desktop... on my laptop, there was no noise whatsoever. This desktop, and a different one I tried, both have the problem... ... Desktops typically have the same sort of display attached as a laptop would have. Specially, I believe this answer refers to the LED backlight panel. ... In any case, this is more of a comment than an answer. ... I had a similar problem while running a USB mixer (Zoom L-12) and audio interface (Behringer UMC-22) that were connected to each other *1 and to a MacBook with thunderbolt. Is this always occurring (from all audio playback software you have) or is this only occurring during recording/mixing, what happens if you just play back an MP3 from a major music player? ... Thanks for the tips. I have since done some more trouble shooting, it seems to me that the hdmi cable thing may have been a coincidence. It seems to me there are two distinct types of noise, on that is constant (cpu noises etc.) and one that is only audible when my input becomes active, a high pitched whine.

Especially if the RCA ins & outs are not mandatory either. https://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/hardware_support That might not be a comprehensive or up-to-date list, but it's at least a starting point. ... I've used the iDefender with several Focusrite 2i2 USB interfaces and it has helped. Your mileage may vary... https://ifi-audio.com/products/idefender3-0/ ... The computer case has a whopping glass panel on one side, it wouldn't surprise me if this is part of the problem, though I cannot hear the noise on the analogue lines if the Maya44 USB is switched off (external USB hub has switchable ports). My Maya44 USBs are 3 years old, no idea when the model was last revised. I have two, though the noise problems are present when one, the other or both are in use. I need a minimum of 3x2 outputs (stereo track 1, stereo track 2, stereo beds/sweepers), but ideally 4x2 (stereo track 1, stereo track 2, stereo bed/sweeper 1, stereo bed/sweeper 2) and 1x2 inputs (stereo mixed audio for streaming out) I used to use the amazing M-Audio 1010LT, but then upgraded my PC to one without the old fashioned PCI slot. Is it actually the DX2000USB, or was there an older model DX2000 which did not have the USB interface included? Click to expand... It is the DX2000USB, but the USB functionality is rather anaemic. You get one stereo input (appears on "Channel 3" of the mixer) and a copy of the record out stereo output. However you did remind me to test the mixer's USB input to see if the noise is present there... I guess Linus decided nobody uses these old devices anymore. I guess he's right as I've given up hacking the bootloader for Mac many years ago. I also own an Apogee USB mic that is class compliant, works with Macos and iOS, but not on Windows 10 or Linux. The newer model does. SSL 2 MKII terrible noise.

Finally, we ran lab measurements on the interfaces to confirm that none of them had any audible flaws that our ears might have missed, such as excessive noisiness or a significant weakness in bass or treble response. These measurements revealed the effect of the different recording modes of each interface, which we discuss in more detail below. The measurements process also uncovered one notable performance distinction among the interfaces: headphone amp power, which was at least adequate in all of the models, though a few produced much more power. Meter design: One of the biggest differences among USB interfaces is in the way their signal-level meters are configured. These meters are critical for setting gain, or record level. If the level is too high, distortion (often called “clipping”) will result. Setting it too low can produce excessive noise and make a recording more difficult to mix. We focused on two-channel USB interfaces to record stereo music, but most of our picks are also available in a multichannel version. ... To cover every angle, we tested the interfaces in music-production settings and also used them to produce podcasts. Like all Wirecutter journalists, we review and test products with complete editorial independence. We’re never made aware of any business implications of our editorial recommendations. Read more about our editorial standards. It’s possible to record music on a computer with nothing more than an inexpensive USB microphone, but most USB mics are designed primarily for voice recording, and few of them can record in stereo.
